I vividly remember that particular episode of "The Flintstones"-It was the first episode of season 6-There was a character in that episode named Eppy Brianstone-Rock music aficionados, like myself, knew it was a parody of Brian Epstein who managed The Beatles during that time. And that same Flintstones episode showed a fake Bedrock stone age era cover of 1970-1995 AT40 chart source magazine Billboard!

Here's another example of a record that was a Chipmunks knockoff-It was actually released a few months before "The Chipmunk Song"-It was called "The Purple People Eater"-The artist was a Oklahoma singer named Sheb Wooley who was also a well-known character actor-He appeared alongside Gary Cooper in the 1952 western "High Noon" & later played trail boss Pete Nolan on TV's "Rawhide" which introduced audiences to Clint Eastwood-In any event,"PPE" employed a sped-up voice-It was a major hit which spent six weeks at # 1 in the late spring-early summer of 1958.

Don't forget David Seville's #1 song "Witch Doctor" in 1958 was pre-Chipmunks with the speeded up voice doing the "OO-EE-OO-AH-AH-TING-TANG-WALLA-WALLA-BING-BANG" line.

Pepino, The Italian Mouse could be considered a Chipmunks knockoff. Pepino also probably knew some people who could have literally knocked off the Chipmunks, preferably prior to 1958.
Just think of how much less annoying the last 62 Christmas seasons could have been! "Today I settled all rodent family business."
BTW did you ever notice how Ross Bagdasarian sounds a little like James Cagney at the start? "allllll right you chipmunks..."

With the title "No Biz Like Show Biz" ? Yes. I bet you have seen all the Flintstones episodes in syndicated reruns and later Cartoon Network, Boomerang, and now MeTV all these years. Not exactly, but speaking about cartoons: Vicky the Viking was (and is still) very popular here in Austria, but my absolute favorite was (and is) "The Ant and the Aardvark". From the originally nameless male aardvark, the German translation became the female ant eater " The blue Elise". And with Marianne Wischmann " The blue Elise" got the voice of Miss Piggy from the Muppet Show. With this little trick one of the numerous "Tom & Jerry" variations advanced to a German-speaking TV cult. Her self-ironic insights (after she was put out of action by the ant, she dryly states: " I hope none of the relatives saw that. They are just waiting for something like that." or, for example, when she is rudely thrown onto the street and complains: " Well, I´m halfway determined to file a lawsuit.". Suddenly a car rolls over her and she comments laconically: " How do I find that ? That was my lawyer !") contribute to the viewing and above all listening pleasure.

Also in 1976 there was a sort of parody cover version: "The Chipmunk Song" done by an act called The Whales. Basically it was the exact opposite of the original; it was three singers who were slowed down, rather than sped up. (Sadly it's not on YouTube) That Whales' Chipmunk Song is now on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3tbBNmOx5M

Here's another song that was an obvious Chipmunks knockoff:"Uh Oh Part 2" by The Nutty Squirrels which peaked at # 14 in 1959.
