I just received my copy of Pete Battistini's book, "American Top 40 With Casey Kasem: The Seventies" today. It is absolutely amazing. I spent a full 90 minutes just lost in it after dinner tonight. So much great information and cool things to look at in it. Truly a perfect companion to Rob Durkee's book.
It costs about $30 including shipping, and is available at authorhouse.com. I highly recommend it! You'll LOVE it!

I believe regular chatter "Mark" was the one who mentioned it the other night in our weekly chat. I checked out the website, very interesting, I will be ordering one when I have the money.

Oh yeah, great book! To borrow a line from Mr. Stevens, it's 'everything you ever wondered, but dare not ask' about AT40 in the '70's. You can tell he really put in a lot of time and effort to get his book just right, well worth the $$$ whether you were an AT40 listener then OR since. Right up there with Dr. Durkee's book.

Pete tells me that the book was 10-12 years in the making, and you can tell.
By the way, I have added a link on the contents page of this site to the order form for Pete's book.

Yes that was me who mentioned Pete's book in a previous chat. It is an excellent read. I especially liked the picture that he put in there from Billboard that said AT40 was selling a lot of burgers in Waterloo. It shows a picture from Henry's restaurant, which was big in the mid-70's in that area.

True, indeed, Mark. And that's just one of the great pieces that Pete has included in the book...I spent a couple of hours with it the first time I picked it up...and barely made a dent. Truly an impressive work! Congrats again, Pete!

I just moved to a new house in Hollywood, Fl, and my copy of Pete's book was waiting for me when I got there with the first load of boxes! Exhausted as I was from the move, I stayed up until 4 in the morning just lost in that book. What an amazing undertaking. It doesn't surprise me at all that it was 11-12 years in the making. Well worth it at twice the price!!

There's no denying that Pete's attention to detail is nothing short of amazing. For me,I've enjoyed the old memo's from Tom Rounds alerting stations to the potentially offensive content of a song that would show up periodically(No No Song,Only the Good die Young,Paradise by the dashboard light etc). Also,Pete's personal reminiscences took me right back to my teenage years, reminding me of the crazy things I did just to listen to the show! If you like statistics,if you like numbers--this is the book to have! Its an excellent companion to go along with Rob's book. Steve Orchard Kingsford,Michigan

That's what I got the biggest kick out of...man, some of the things I used to do to hear Casey or Shadoe...I'll never forget being down at my grandparents' house on the Jersey shore and getting Shadoe on a Philadelphia radio station...that came in crystal-clear. Well, that is, if you had the antenna pointed in the right direction and a sufficient amount of tin foil wrapped around it. And to add insult to injury, there...the show aired at 1am. But I recorded it (using 120-minute cassettes so I'd only have to get out of bed once in the middle of the show to change tapes), hoping that the signal would hold, and would listen the next day. (The signal usually held out.)

Dang, I didn't realize it was available through amazon.com (it wasn't when I first checked a few months back). Now I can buy it without having to "borrow" my roommate's credit card!

sounds like you will be like me with Robs book, I finished it in under 24 hours, and I hated the fact I needed to sleep before finishing it!

Hey if all this talk about AT40 coming back to XM 80's and coming to XM 70's for the first time is true, first of all my compliments to all involved who got the deal worked out and second, what better reason to snatch up Pete's and Rob's books on the show. Both serve as great guides while all the old countdowns get their just replays! I hope they get back on the air by 4th of July / 'Anniversary'.

I just received my copy today. What a great book! I started listening to the show in the 80s, but am fascinated with all of the behind the scenes info on the show. I was surprised that they used to do the show live to tape, and not voice track it.
Its fun to read the memos. I haven't seen the term WATS line in ages! How times have changed. I looked up from the book after a couple of hours, and sort of felt like it was 1975!
