We all know that American Top 40 is the most successful radio countdown show of all time. Is AT40 considered as a Franchise? I know that it has spawned spinoff shows like, American Top 20 AC (now American Top 10), American Top 20 Hot AC, and American Top 40 Flashback. Since AT40 is nearing its 35th anniversary, is it considered as being a franchise? And by the way, how does a TV or a radio show become a franchise?

That was a thought provoking question, my immediate reaction however was no but I decided to find a definition of the word franchise, and here is is from dictionary.com:
1. A privilege or right officially granted a person or a group by a government, especially: - The constitutional or statutory right to vote. - The establishment of a corporation's existence. - The granting of certain rights and powers to a corporation. - Legal immunity from servitude, certain burdens, or other restrictions.
2. Authorization granted to someone to sell or distribute a company's goods or services in a certain area.
3. A business or group of businesses established or operated under such authorization.
4. The territory or limits within which immunity, a privilege, or a right may be exercised.
5. A professional sports team.
**end of defnition**
I do not believe At40 fits into any of the above to be labeled a franchise, so as my original feeling, I would still have to say No.

When I think of the word franchise in relation to a corporation, I think of places like McDonald's, that have a main corporate headquarters and tens of thousands of franchises all over the world. So no, I wouldn't consider AT40 to be a franchise, since it's more like the main corporation. I'll borrow a phrase from George Clinton and say I consider AT40 to be "The Mothership". ;D

I think JB was referring to the entertainment definition of "franchise" (e.g., a movie and its many sequels are collectively called a franchise). Not sure if I'd classify AT40 as such, but with its spinoffs (and I'd also include the TV show "America's Top Ten"), it's probably the closest thing to a franchise that radio has seen in the fifty years of the Rock Era.

5. A professional sports team. That's bringing to mind a wacky mental image of a bunch of people wearing jerseys emblazoned with Casey's picture on the front and the charted songs' names and ranks on the back.

like I said, I re-printed it straight from dictionary.com Nobody's doubting that you did. I was talking about an informal (call it slang, if you will) definition of franchise (for examples of movie franchises, see here) which may not necessarily appear in standard dictionaries.

I used to feel so sorry for Waiting For A Girl Like You, especially after listening to the 1982 YE. It spent 10 weeks at #2 without ever getting to #1 and in its final week a #4 song(I Can't Go For That), jumped over it #1 with Waiting For A Girl sitting at #2 for its last week.
