Michel Legrand (1932-2019) Only a short while after passing of Francis Lai, sorry to hear that we lost another giant of film music this weekend. Michel Legrand was 86 years old and active until his last days. A prolific musician, his over 200 film scores could not be boxed in any particular genre. However, his penchant for jazz/big band (collaborating with likes of Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin and Quincy Jones), as well as American movie musicals of the 1940s and 1950s influenced majority of his work. Even though his film music career started in the mid-1950s in his native France, it was not until his oscar-winning score for “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” that he was more actively recruited by filmmakers to compose for wide range of memorable movies like “The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)”, “Summer of 42”, “Yentl”. The famous theme for the tele-film “Brian’s Song” was his sole Hot 100 entry (#17 AC in 1972). In fact he was the featured musician in an animated ABC Afterschool Special from 1977 called “Michel’s Mixed-Up Musical Bird.” Michel Legrand had additional album titles on both Billboard 200 and BB Jazz Album charts as late as 2011. His final film compositions include recently released Orson Welles movie ‘The Other Side of the Wind (2018). Here’s a sample of his most famous soundtrack themes: From 1968: Theme from The Thomas Crown Affair (The Windmills of Your Mind)From 1971: Theme from “The Go-Between”From 1964: Generique from “Umbrellas of Cherbourg”Obituary
