Earlier today, I found out that one of my favorite radio station here in Detroit, WDRQ-FM (93.1) dropped its current hits format yesterday, and has become "DOUG-FM", a radio station a wide mix of rock and pop music with the motto "We play everything". The station is now playing all music. Doug is a variation of the "JACK" format, which has popped up in several market around the country and in Canada and this is radio's attempt to stop young listeners migration to satellite radio iPods. They want this new station to resemble an iPod in shuffle mode. I can't believe that my 'DRQ is gone. They said that DRQ hasn't been doing too well in the ratings, and when that happens, changes have to be made. I guess that it gets a bit boring listening to the same music over and over again. I understand that the radio wanted to try something new and different for better ratings, but they didn't have to get rid of WDRQ to do it.

The "JACK" format has slowly been entering the world of radio...it's sort of a mix between Classic Rock, 80's, and Hot AC. I know for the last two weekends, several Infinity Hot AC's (including mine, WQAL/Cleveland) have been doing "We Play Everything Weekends", almost teasing the possibility of becoming "JACK-FM" stations.
The thing is......if you listen long enough, they have a set playlist just like all other stations, the genre of the music just happens to be more spread out and varied.
