Just thought I would vent a bit on this. I'm not so much angry as it's just "yup, it's exactly how everyone says it is..."
So, I have my weekly radio show on my college station every Tuesday, and yesterday I was asked to do a fill in slot which was a double show from 6-10pm.
While our station focuses primarily on Alternative music, there is also plenty of room on the schedule for 'Specialty Shows'. The only real catch is -- they don't want mainstream music played on the station, which although I don't like, I have always gone along with.
On each show you are allowed so many "DJ Pick" songs, and generally I will go mainstream on maybe 1 or 2, as does every DJ (including our PD during his shift)..and I always close my show with my 2 closing songs: "We Built This City" by Starship and "Tomorrow Never Knows" by The Beatles.
Well...with my double shift last night, I asked permission of our Music Director if it would be ok to have an "80's Power Hour" during the last hour of the show, and she just loved the idea. The idea was not that every song would be 80's, but that for every "regular playlist" song I played, I would play 2 80's songs. The MD's show was the timeslot after mine, and she was there early making requests and enjoying the show.
About 15 minutes into the show, the PD came by and long story short, that was the end of the "80's Power Hour." I made no mention of it ending on the air, and just continued to play the regular playlist. At the end of the show, I closed with my two closers as always -- per direct order of the Music Director, who was far from happy at this point who told me to "do as I please."
The MD and I spent the rest of the shift chatting about how even though I had tons of appointment tune ins for the 80's power hour, every other person on our "Executive Board" loved the idea...the PD simply said no and that was that, and that is how radio is.
Anyway... done venting. Anyone else ever had a similar experience? I know that Casey did that day he found the old magazine in the trash can.
