As I am typing this, "Lights" by Journey is playing on AT10 during their spotlight of hits from 1978.
I did not realize "Lights" hit in 1978. All of the Hot AC's in the area here play it on their 80's weekends and 80's spotlights. Since nearly all of Journey's other hits are from the 80's, I just learned that "Lights" was actually a late-70's hit.
What other big Journey hits were actually from the 70's?
Also-- Casey mentioned something about a 1993 version. I have never heard that-- is it similar?
I thought I was a pretty decent Journey fan-- guess not. Casey still teaches me something new every week!

The 1993 version was a live version of the song. It peaked at #74 on the Hot 100 and at #64 on Hot 100 Airplay.
According to Whitburn's book, the song was recorded "live" in 1980.

I never heard the live version. I know when I moved to Titusville in 1993 and got my first experience hearing a Hot AC station, they played the original version of "Lights" and I thought it must be a new release or something. On that note, I have a question about apparently an old song maybe returning and released recently also. There is a song Mix 105.1 has started playing frequently by Bob Marley. Was there a movie just put out with this song in it and thus its being played/released, a new CD put out with stuff he did before he died, or is this a case of the radio station just finding it in the library and falling in love with it and playing it all the time?

What other big Journey hits were actually from the 70's? "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" entered the Billboard Top 40 on 8/25/79. Other than that, all of Journey's songs hit the chart from 1980 forward. Interestingly, "Lights" never hit the Billboard Top 40.

To answer all questions about the 1993 version of the song light by Journey heres the Story. It was first released on the lp Infinity in 1978 and peaked at #68 omn the hot 100. in 1981 Journey released a live lp called captured witch featured a live versions of the song. The studio version the appered on thw 1988 Journey Greatest Hits Cd. In late 1992 Journey relased a 3 Cd box set called Times3. A singles was released from it. It was that same 1981 live version of Light as featured on the captured lp this time from the time3 box set. it rentered the Billboard Hot 100 this time as a live single. this time peaking at #74 in Late january/Early February. i hope this helps

I own "The Essential Journey" which is a 2 disc set of nearly every hit they have had, with disc 1 being what I call the 80's disc and disc 2 being what I call the 90's disc. The live version of "Lights" is not included in the compilation.

I remember a local AC station playing this song in 1993 and at the time I'd never heard it before, so I thought it was new. This station also featured it on their year-end countdown.
