So I’m getting caught up on my weekly chronological shows. I was up to 2/9/08 today and what do I hear? Why, I hear a question from a listener. Some fellow named Brett Van Wagner from Meadville, OH asked have there ever been songs that were #1 on the pop and country charts. Casey proceeded to give a wrong answer of what the last one to do so was, but hey that’s the not point. It’s this Brett guy. Whatever happened to him....

I never had the honor of having my question read on any Casey show...well, because I never sent one in! I had thought about it though a few times. Music and charts fascinated me well before my teenage years. There's been a lot of great questions asked over the years. You know, @paul, since we're both listening to 1978, it's just a matter of time before we come to dukelightning's QL. I should find that thread about board members having written in to Casey at one point. Pretty fun to read.

He posted a few things last weekend, so he'll probably be back this weekend as well.

In all seriousness though - has it really been 10 years since that segment aired? How time flies.

Just curious, what did Casey answer and what was the correct answer? I don't think it was anything by Dolly since she didn't have any #1s in R&R.

I don’t even remember anymore, but in my world “Islands in the Stream” would be and so any other answer he’d give on a show that has “American” in its title I’m going to say is wrong.

He answered with Lady by Kenny Rogers in 1980.

He answered with Lady by Kenny Rogers in 1980. According to Radio & Records/Mediabase, that was then the correct answer. A year later (February 2009), when Taylor Swift hit #1 on AT40 with "Love Story" (incidentally, #1 on Casey's last AT10 that summer), Ryan Seacrest said it was the first country hit to reach #1 on the pop chart since "Lady". As hard as it may be now to recall when Taylor was a country singer, that was accurate according to AT40's post-Billboard rules for quoting past chart data.

But in between "Lady" and "Love Story" there was "9 to 5", "I Love a Rainy Night", and "Islands in the Stream". Those songs hit #1 on Billboard but they did not on Radio & Records. On R & R, "9 to 5" and "Islands In The Stream" both peaked at #2, and "I Love A Rainy Night" peaked at #5. They must have used Radio & Records data in answering that question.

I seem to recall that Seacrest said that the last time country song to hit #1 was "Islands In The Stream", but then again, it's been nearly ten years since I heard that show, so I may be remembering incorrectly.
