I just bought a copy of Ben Fong-Torres' book "The Hits Just Keep On Coming: A History of Top 40 Radio"
I highly recommend it, as it is a very interesting read on how radio evolved into Top 40 radio, and then the ultimate change and decline of Top 40 in the 90's. There is a section on Casey Kasem, as well as Rick Dees, and they both have blurbs on the decline of Top 40 Radio.
In addition- the book also has a CD of old airchecks. There are five minutes of pre-AT40 Casey airchecks, some when he was doing his current style in the 60's, but by far the most entertaining (and shocking, since I have never heard them) are airchecks from the "Casey At The Mike" program, which was his comedy program. Had I not known, I would not have even been able to tell that was Casey Kasem.
I highly recommend the book for the CD of airchecks alone (others include Alan Freed, Gary Owens, Rick Dees, Robert W. Morgan, and Scott Shannon....just to name a few) an awesome book!

Brett's right...it's an excellent book and the CD is great as well. Some of the tracks on the CD aren't the greatest quality-wise, but I'm sure they're the best that could be found and still fun listening.
