Every year during this site's Top 40 Christmas Countdown, I read the story of how Jose Feliciano was heavily criticized in 1968 for singing our National Anthem "his way." However, the story never explains what, specifically, was so unusual about the way he sang it.
Anybody know?

It was recorded during the World Series in 1968 in Detroit's Tiger Stadium on 10/07. Feliciano did an up-tempo, Latin-influenced (of course) version, and I can remember when Casey told this story on AT40 way back in the day (early 80's, probably), at the end of the song you could hear about equal numbers of boos and cheers from the crowd. I didn't hear anything offensive about it. But of course, I loved Marvin Gaye's version at the NBA All-Star game. It ranks up there with Whitney's as the best version ever, IMHO.
