#4. WPOZ: Z88.3 Christian (Orlando, FL)
It became easily my favorite Christian station on the planet when I first heard it and remains so to this day. Variety of different types of christian music sets this station apart from any I have ever heard. They are fun to listen to, informative, technological(if you have one of those new radios in your car, Z88.3 uses the info AND traffic features), plus Lisa Williams; the host of the Weekend Top 25 National Countdown show works for the station. I look forward to many more wonderful years hearing this station everyday.
#3. WQIK Country (Jacksonville, FL)
Frank Thius, Gregory Gaines, Leroy Boomer, Lee Shannon, Bob Kingsley, Big Jim, Ed Russ, Beaulah Russ, and Robbie Rose...wow...seems I know a lot of names from this radio station. My mom listened to this station when I was growing up, looking back I didnt realize I was listening to a good quality radio station. Now this station sucks as do every other Clearchannel owned station in Jacksonville. It is the station that has forever and a day brought us American Country Countdown every week. The morning shows have always been entertaining, funny, and informative. Because of its past reputation and a morning show that continues a great tradition, it ranks #3. Only one station from Jacksonville ranks higher.....it may surprise you though to learn that.....
#2. WAPE CHR (Jacksonville, Fl)
When I first started listening many years ago, The Big Ape was known as Power 95. Those were, IMO its best years. They had the usual Top 5 at 5, Top 9 at 9, request lunch hour, etc. I also have said in past chats that on Sundays then-Power 95 would air Scott Shannon 6-9, Casey's Top 40 9-1, American Top 40 6pm-10pm, and one of the morning shows replayed right after. In 1991 this changed to Future Hits 7-8, Casey 8-12, and later that year Adam Curry's show was on from 10pm-1am. AT40 got booted in January of 91. There was also the morning show featuring Hoyle Dempsey, he finally stepped down from the station in December 2002. Now, everything was smooth sailing on Power 95 until the Spring of 1993. Thats when they whole station seemed to change overnight. No longer was it Power 95, it was now back to its old moniker of WAPE 95.1 The Big Ape, the Ape Yell was and is the top of the hour station ID. However the station fropped in terms of slickness, it felt like they went from a technically advanced studio to a a technologically handicapped one. Gone were the slick station ID voices and background music for the DJ's, there was nothing but monotone voices....it was a horrible transition. But that wasn't the worst of it, the worst of it was in the music. Suddenly the only Top 40 local station in town invoked this No Rap/No Hard Rock rule. A rule never very well defined, see, we still had New Orders "Regret", Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Stone Temple Pilots, etc clouding the WAPE airwaves, but if a song had even a HINT of rap in it, it was removed entirely or replaced with a version with no raps in it....this led to strange versions of "If I had No Loot" and "Looking Through Patient Eyes" being aired. However, it didn't stop with their music, it extended to Casey's Top 40. They would remove songs that were considered rap and do one of three things, replace it with their version if they had one, ignore it altogether, or replace them with a previous weeks number of a song that was no longer on the survey(most of the time it was Dr. Dre's latest being replaced with "Dont Take Away My Heaven" by Aaron Neville) however the worst replacement attempt took place the first week our good buddy DDDaaaaaavvvviiiiiddddd PPPPPeeeerrrrrrrrrrrryyyyy sat in for Casey.....Dre's song was on the survey, but Perry had never sat in before, so what did they do, air the #31 jingle and just play "Dont Take Away My Heaven" from start to finish, no one announcing the song, no attempt to make it look professionally done, nothing. Then when the song faded out, it was like the show cut back over to Casey's Top 40 and you hear Dre Day still playing in the background and Perry saying "one....For Casey Kasem, I'm David Perry and the survey continues" or whatever he said. It really sounded bush league, there were instances of them replacing segments with Casey's Countdown segments, etc. Plus the show sounded audio wise like someone had recorded the CD shows to a tape and edited on demand on a $29.95 boombox from Pic n Save or Phar Mor. It was really low quality stuff. This ineptness drove me back to listening to 99.9 for Casey's show....and almost everything else. In later years they woul dget the hang of it by just cutting out the rap parts of songs and leaving the rest in, such examples...Ghetto Superstar. Now in recent years with the onslaught of Hip Hop, these rules have quietly vanished into obscurity where they belong. However, the lingering effect of those few months still live in my memory. Oh, and probably the most ironic thing is now on Friday afternoon they do the Fiday 5 O'Clock Power Hour when they play dance music from the early 90's....along with such hysterical voiceovers like "we brought back the power with the same music you have been partying with on the same station you've partied to it on)....iromic because half the songs they play now were not HEARD on there at all back in the mid 90's....like Shoop and Whoomp! There It Is!
Anyway, those are the bottom 9, now.......
#1. WOMX: Mix 105.1 FM Hot AC (Orlando, FL)
When I first moved to Titusville in 1993, There were three stations within 2 positions on the dial...all three made this list. XL 106.7, WA1A 107.1, and this one. Of the three, this one was the strongest and always seem to play what I wanted to hear. You are probably asking, what radio shows did it air? It aired 1....Powerline. This station did not then and does not now specialize in countdown shows, they do air Backtrax USA 90's version Sunday mornings now though. This is a HOT AC station, however this was before I even knew what Hot AC was, they always seemed to be playing music I love. Did then, and do now. It brought us Friday Night 80's when the 80's weren't "cool." Seventies Saturday Night, the Scott & Erica Morning show is funny but clean. It didnt take long in 1993 for me fall madly in love with this radio station, and on my many trips to the city beautiful I made it a point to listen as often as I could, now that I live here, there shoul dbe no question what the #1 button is on my preset. It was great then, and it is still great now.
Whew....I think it took roundabout 2 1/2 hours to finish this list. Any replies or comments or your own lists are welcome. BTW, my new email address is you care to write is zimm7778@joimail.com.
