I know this isnt really countdown info necessarily, but I told someone several months ago that one day I was going to do a posting based on my Top 10 favorite radio stations, and in honor of finally moving to Orlando, Fl....yes, chatters; the westside hostage crisis is over ;D....I am finally going to do it. Btw, my new email address is zimm7778@joimail.com
10. KIIS-FM CHR (LA)
Oh what might have been is the cry on this one. Last year I bought XM radio SPECIFICALLY AND ONLY so I could hear this station, less than one month after establighing service, KIIS FM LA Radio station became Kiss XM Jukebox player. I had listened to this station for years off and on over the internet, and was saddened when the station was discontinued. Nothing really has to be said about this station everyone doesnt already know, Dees, Spears, JoJo, Valentine, and WT40, all made it worth listening to me, and rank it at #10 all time for me.
#9. WXXL: XL106.7 CHR (Orlando, Fl)
It was the first station I heard which played Casey's Biggest Hits regularly...5:50am just before the Doc & Johnny morning show. It was also the station that allowed me to once again hear Shadoe Stevens American Top 40. The program aired Saturday morning from 6-10, with Sundays lineup being Portfolio, On the Radio, Future Hits, and then Casey's Top 40. The one drawback of this station is when Casey would sign off, the DJ would always sign him off with something crass or insulting to say; other than these times my listening to XL was a rarity(which you will see why later), but the times I did listen give it enough steam to land at #9.
#8. WNCM Christian (Jacksonville, Fl)
Before "The Promise"(an all christian music station which does not and would not rank on this list) there was "The River" which has been flowing for 15+ years I believe now. It was the all purpose Christian station, with sharathons, music, nearly every Christian music show including CCM Countdown, CCM Radio Magazine, Soul 2 Soul, and of course 20 The Rich Mullins Loving Magazine; and it also had many preaching shows as well. Thus the reason I call it the all purpose Christian station. For years, I found myself listening to this station and this station only for spiritual uplifting in both song and words. The DJ's werent exactly the crem de la crem but they sufficed.
#7. WAOA: WA1A CHR (Melbourne, FL)
I dont understand it, I really don't....how is it you can live 45 minutes away from one city and you cant pick it up, but 75 minutes away you can?! I pose this question because in my year and a half of Melbourne/Cocoa living, you couldnt pick up XL 106.7 if you wanted to, yet Titusville which is farther away you could! Anyway, WAOA brought us upon my arrival in T-ville back in 93, Rob's favorite show The Top 30 Hitlist w/Adam Curry, Rick Dees Weekly Top 40(at an odd time, 3pm on Sunday), UK Chart Attack, and Hitline USA. These shows would later fade out and only Dees's show would remain....at 6am Saturday morning. But over the years I would listen to this station primarily for Top 40 hits while living in Central Florida. They had less commercials, werent in commercials very long, and to this day are not owned by a major media outlet. Its a local company based I believe from the area.
#6. The OLD WFKS/WNFI CHR/80's (Daytona Beach, Fl)
I am sure you have heard the saying "You had me from Hello" well, in more ways than one, this station did exactly that. My sister was driving down the road listening to what was then known as I-100 WNFI, and I heard a commercial.......for American Top 40 w/Shadoe Stevens airing Sundays at 8am. I immediately fell in love with I-100. See, this was the summer of 1991; the previous January WAPE cancelled the show from airing. Faithfully I would listen every Sunday morning to Shadoe once again whenever I could. The following March, they dropped the program and the station name in general for the name "The New 99.9 FM WNFI" and picked up Casey's Top 40 in the same timeslot of Sundays 8-12. With this, I just switched back to listening to WAPE..until WAPE F'ed up which we will address later on. Finally, the station in August 1993, because 99.9 Kiss FM and changed the call letters to WFKS(now those call letters belong to 97.9 Kiss in Jax)
and like the saying says, they had me from hello. I was listening when the station turned to Kiss and I listened until it became a Coutry station 6 years later. It would eventually settle on an 80's emphasis while playing some newer stuff, but all current radio shows ceased in 1995 for favor of only Backtrax USA. Still, back in late 1993 I thought this was the greatest radio station in listening range, I think back on those days very fondly.
#5. WOKV Talk (Jacksonville, FL)
When is a talk radio station NOT just a talk radio station? When it has enough pull to beat out every sports station in town to be the official radio station of the local pro football team...oh, and also when it is on the same frequency as WAPE was in its AM days.....a frequency that would extend all the way to Virginia. Over the years this station has brought the biggest names in talk radio....Edell, Dr. Laura, Limbaugh, Boortz, Howard, Savage, Hannity, Hamblin, and more have all been apart of the airwaves that have made this the most listened to station in the city(I think). It was ashame that my last job in Jax you couldnt pick up any AM stations!
