"Let Me Love You" ascending to the top of AT 40 last week marked a rarity: Of Justin Beiber's last two number ones, only one other song was at the top between the two reigns of Bieber. In AT 40 history, I know the Bee Gees accomplished this twice, and I know Hall and Oates did it as well. Did anyone else come close in the first run of AT 40, or has anyone done it since? It should be noted that Hall and Oates had 10 weeks between their two songs at the top, and I'm sure many artists have waited less time in between singles to hit the top. Also, Bieber did it as a featured artist and not as the main artist on both songs. It really just goes to show how impressive of a feat the Bee Gees pulled off between December of 1977 and May of 1978. EDIT: I originally said "Cold Water" was the number one song last week. Thank you to mkarns for the correction!

Donna Summer had 2 weeks between #1 songs in 1979. Ironically, the show I heard yesterday, 12/5/87, had Charlie Van Dyke doing a whatever happened to segment on the artist in between...Anita Ward. And MJ had 1 week in between in 1983 closest anyone came to back to back #1 hits a la the Beatles during the first run of AT40.

I really appreciate the refresher on that...thank you. I never really put together Donna Summer having two number ones that close for some reason, even though at the time she was having the first of two times in 1979 having 2 songs in the top 5 (ironically, Bieber has now done that twice this year as well). 1979 will always be one of my favorite music years just from a chart perspective.

Mariah Carey did it a few times:
in 1993, "Dreamlover" was succeeded at #1 by Ace of Base's "All That She Wants", which was succeeded by "Hero".
in 1995, "Name" by the Goo Goo Dolls was all that got between "Fantasy" and "One Sweet Day" being back to back #1's. (Casey's Top 40 as there was no AT40 on the air then)
in 2005, "We Belong Together" was succeeded by DHT's "Listen To Your Heart", which was followed by "Shake It Off".

Actually, Justin Bieber's #1 last week was "Let Me Love You" with DJ Snake. "Cool Water" (with Major Lazer) was on top in Sept/Oct, with the Chainsmokers' "Closer" in between them for six weeks.
Earlier this year, Bieber had an even shorter gap (three weeks) between his AT40 #1's "Sorry" and "Love Yourself", but that was with two different songs on top: "Same Old Love" by Selena Gomez (ironically, Bieber's onetime SO) and "Here" by Alessia Cara.

You are correct, and I will edit and note. "Let Me Love You" was last weeks number one with Mr. Snake. "Cold Water" was the former, and not the latter. Thank you! The three week gap with two different songs seemed to be the trend this year. I think it might have been you who noted seven or so weeks ago the volume of number one songs on AT 40 was unprecedented for the last quarter century. But we soon found chainsmoking stunts many things...including rapid movement at the top!

I should have gotten the 1995 one for sure. Thank you for adding these three. I know people want to hate on Beiber and all of that, but think of the names we have come up with that has pulled this off: The Bee Gees (twice), Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, Hall and Oates, Mariah Carey (three times), and Beiber. You have to give the kid props. I know I will. I'm a big fan of all the stuff he has put out this year, single or collaboration.

In 2010 Lady Gaga would achieve this rare feat. In January of 2010 Lady Gaga would go to number one with, "Bad Romance". After being replaced at the top by Ke$ha, she would then go back to number one in March with "Telephone", featuring Beyonce.

I noticed in the most recent show, it was mentioned that if Calvin Harris hit's the chart again he would tie David Guetta for most EDM artists with chart hits.

Didn't this feat also happen with Nelly's "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma" in 2002?
I know Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" was #1 on July 27, 2002 and August 3, 2002, to say the least. I'd be tempted to say that Avril's song was the only #1 between Nelly's two #1 songs in the summer of 2002.

Not only did Nelly pull it off... but so did Avril herself as "Sk8er Boi" kicked "Dilemma" out of #1!
