When Ryan took over for Casey on the January 10, 2004 show it obviously marked a new beginning for the show. It sounded different, had a different feel, etc. etc. etc. One of the things that I wondered in 2004 was how long it would take for Ryan to do a show in which NONE of the artists would have been on American Top 40 while Casey was doing it. I figured it would obviously take some time. But as we are creeping up on the 13th anniversary of Ryan ruling the roost, it is amazing that even to this day, almost every show that Ryan has done has had an act that charted before 2004. I admit that I haven't followed the 2004-present times nearly as closely as I did the Casey years, but every time I do check or listen to the new AT 40 there always seem to be, still, one or two "pre Ryan" flies in the ointment. This week alone you have Coldplay, Pink and Justin Timberlake that Casey counted down back in the day. Before that, Nelly was making a run. Or Brittney Spears. Or Gwen Stefani. Or Maroon 5...you get the drift.
My question is simple, but I have yet to find an answer: what is the earliest date that Ryan did an AT 40 show with only artists who began charting after 1/3/04? I think I found one in 2014, but I didn't double check it. This has helped to remind me that some pop artists really have the chops to transcend time and eras.

Let me also add Daft Punk, from this week's countdown, that had the honor of being counted down by Casey.

I'm not sure exactly when; I'd have to do some more research. But it wasn't in 2014, as every week that year had at least one act that charted prior to the start of 2004, among them Eminem, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Maroon 5 (who only barely qualify, as they first hit in late 2003.)

Good call on 2014, I went back and checked and saw it wasn't 2014, it was 2015. "Sugar" by Maroon 5 fell off on 9/19/15 making 9/26/15 a show in which none of the artists were counted down by Casey, from an AT 40 perspective. It remained that way for four week until 10/24/15 when Maroon 5 would debut with "Feelings". For some reason I thought it was when "Animals" was coming on or falling off the 40.
It is kind of neat to try to find a random Top 40 and see if any of those acts have charted for 12 or 13 years. It really is fairly common (which I guess shouldn't surprise me but it does). For example I chose a couple of random dates like 5/26/90 and number two was Heart. 5/25/91 and Rod Stewart is in the Top 10. I am curious to see if there was a time before the end of September 2015 that there were no Casey songs, but I don't think it would be too much more in the past.

If you are looking just for artists Casey mentioned, don't forget there may be some stuff he counted down on AT20 from 2004-2009. Cool topic, although I never will have the patience to go through that stuff, I like reading about it

Hopefully there will be some people out there that like to go back and look at old charts! I'm still betting that it won't be much earlier than 2015 though.

As a point of reference, the first week in which Casey counted down a top 40 composed entirely of artists who made their top 40 debut on or after the first AT40 show was 4/14/84. Because there was a LDD by Joe Cocker in that show, the first show with no artists who debuted before 7/11/70 was 4/21/84. So Ryan evidently took a couple years less than Casey to get to the status in question.

That is awesome research! So almost 14 years before Casey had a show in which the 40 were all artists that premiered after 7/4/70. Fascinating.
To put another spin on how rare it is to just have a totally "new" artists top 40, even after decades: On the last show that Casey did on 1/3/04, there was an artist that had hit the top 40 before American Top 40 made its debut in 1970. Santana: in the 40 before Casey started counting them down, and in the 40 after Casey hung it up.
