I had assumed the singer for Cock Robin was a husky voiced woman ala Moyet until I saw the video for “When your Heart is Weak” and learned that his name is Peter Kingsbery.

I thought the lead singer for Portugal. The Man was a woman the first few times I heard “Feel It Still.”

Doris Troy in "Just One Look", I thought it was a man singing that song. That one reminds me of Hurt by Timi Yuro. Her name didn't clarify matters much either.

I second the Nick Gilder reference, and will add another, far more obscure reference. In 1990, there was a Top 30 song called Notice Me by Nikki. Nikki was a man who not only sounded feminine, but spelled his name as a woman would. That’s what I was going to say too. And the video didn’t help much either

I thought that the main singer on the 1974 hit by The Tymes "You Little Trustmaker" sounded like Dionne Warwick.

When I was a kid, I thought that the singer of the original "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" was a woman. Later I found it was Frankie Lymon.

I thought Ian Matthews was a woman singing Woodstock until I recently learned it was Ian Matthews. But hey it was only 50 years of being wrong. No big deal.

The first time I heard Russell Tompkins of The Stylistics sing "You Are Everything", I thought it was a woman singing. Dick Clark originally thought the same thing about the Stylistics, and said so when introing “Betcha, By Golly, Wow” when he filled in for Casey.

For years, I thought that the person singing backup on Running With the Night was a woman. I found out a few years ago that it's none other than Richard Marx.

It's too bad RuPaul never made AT40 nor Casey's Top 40 with "Supermodel - You Better Work" in 1993, is RuPaul a male fashion designer who dresses like a woman?

Here's a forgotten gem, and when I heard it in 1979 thought it was Diana Ross--"Let Me Take You Dancing" by superstar Bryan Adams. Bryan has been noted that he was majorly less than happy with that song! I believe that he refuses to perform that in concerts! But hey, it was 1979, and wasn't everyone doing Disco!

I thought the lead singer of Kajagoogoo, famous for their song of 1983 caled "Too Shy", was female, but Kajagoogoo was an all male British group.
