Alison Moyet sounded like a man to me on "Invisible".

I second the Nick Gilder reference, and will add another, far more obscure reference. In 1990, there was a Top 30 song called Notice Me by Nikki. Nikki was a man who not only sounded feminine, but spelled his name as a woman would.
(Useless trivia -- according to Wikipedia, Nikki (who no longer goes by that name) is married to Martika.)

^Good one! I had forgotten about Nikki.
Also, in 1992, Casey did a story on Positive K who sounded like a woman but was actually a man.
And a similar story in 2001 for Gigi D'Augustino's song "I'll Fly With You."

I thought Tracy Chapman was a man when "Fast Car" came out. The name Tracy and the video didn't really clear it up for me either, until I paid attention to the lyrics and heard her say "I'll get a job as a check out girl..."

Alison Moyet sounded like a man to me on "Invisible". Sounded like a man to me on Situation and Don't Go as well...two of my favorite dance songs

Tracy Chapman. For the longest time I thought she was a man.

The deep voice in the chorus to The Pointer Sisters' "Automatic." I had always thought that sounded just like a man. Perhaps their voices were electronically manipulated. I always thought it was a man singing Automatic as well. I was like, do the Pointer Sisters have a brother lol? Turns out it was written for a man and it turned out Ruth Pointer had a deep voice. I always thought Rick Astley was a black man. I was shocked to see a white guy with red hair and freckles. Same for Taylor Dayne. I thought she sounded like a soulful black women.

Taking an artist from the 90s and doing the vice versa that JMW suggested... does anyone remember a singer named Billie Myers who sang the Top 20 hit, "Kiss The Rain" in early 1998? In the first verse when she sings, "Hello... can you hear me?"... I never thought for a second it could be a female singing the song. And when the DJ announces the song is sung by Billie Myers, I'm thinking Billy Myers. When I saw the song's video for the first time, that's when I realized, "Oops!" You beat me to it about Billie Myers, thought for sure she was a man! Speaking of Jackie Blue by Ozark Mountain Daredevils, I thought it was by Carly Simon for many years.

In 1982, a Canadian female duo called Cheri had a Top 40 hit called "Murphy Law". For many years, I was thinking it was Yarbrough and Peoples singing that song because of the sped up vocals and laughs which was also featured in their 1981 hit, "Don't Stop The Music". I had assumed that "Murphy's Law" was the follow-up to "Don't Stop The Music". When "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman came out back in 1988, it also assumed that it was a man singing. What makes the name Tracy interesting is that Tracy is also a unisex man. Also, everytime I hear the song, "Just One Look" by Doris Troy, it sounds like a man is singing the song but I don't know of any men named Doris.

From the duos/duets category , how about Neil & Dara Sedaka's 1980 hit "Should've Never Let You Go". It sounded more like a mother/daughter duet rather than a father/daughter duet. I also think that Andy Bell of Erasure was a dead ringer for Annie Lennox.

I'll agree with you all on both Billie Meyers and Tracy Chapman. Not only could their voices have passed for either a man or a woman, but their first names could be male or female as well.
One that comes to mind for me is Prince with "I Wanna Be Your Lover". When that song first came out and nobody knew who sang it yet, I assumed it was a woman singing. And funny, didn't know it was Prince until the late 80's when I saw a copy of a Billboard magazine from the time and it occurred to me that Prince sang that song (of course he was a megastar by then)...until that point, I'd assumed that "Little Red Corvette" in 1983 was his first top 40 hit.

The first time I heard Klymaxx singing "I Miss You," I thought it was Michael Jackson.
When I first heard "Missing" by Everything But The Girl, I wasn't sure if a man or woman was singing.
And, even Casey pointed out the confusion in this one, one would think that Laurie London who sings "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands" is obviously a woman, but not in this case.
