I have the original, but I'm not sure if I'll upgrade. I don't think I want to lose the 19th century listings, or the pop music timeline at the front of the book.

I also bought the first ed. about 20 years ago from Borders. I don't think this was specially one of their big sellers. But I believe research for the updated version is done mostly by Whitburn himself (rather than one of his key staff or an outside personnel like the first book). As to why the 1800s got reduced in the new version, I suspect the lack of meaningful original listings (like only top 3.)
Unfortunately for me, no updating of Dance book in sight. The last time I contacted Record Reseach, their new immediate-future-projects would be continuation of CB decade-long charts, and CB/RW genre books.

I contacted Record Research myself years ago and they said they are no longer updating the Dance book (I believe that book was also done using outside research - I got my copy on eBay from one of the guys who worked on it). That's one of many books (new or updated) I'd love to see from them.

It doesn't appear that the "charts" have been expanded or recompiled. This appears to be the same data from Pop Memories, albeit with the first ten and last 14 years trimmed. Of course these are mostly charts that Record Research created themselves from various information from that era, not "real" charts compiled at the time, so the compilation methods have been criticized.
Still, almost 30 years having passed means that there's probably a lot of updated information and opportunities to correct mistakes that may have been made back in the pre-internet 1980's. The B-sides listings are worth the price by themselves. I've got just about every RR book out, and I'll have to get this one too.
(And I'm already loving that there will be record labels shown on the cover.)

Placed my order. I like the new, larger standard size of their books (8.5" x 11").
I am most interested in seeing original charts, so I bought the 'Cash Box Top 100 Charts: The Seventies'. Hope they come out with the 60's and 80's editions.
Then I would like to see the original chart pop collections from Record World for the 60's, 70's and 80's (until 1982).
Finally I wish they would continue the album chart collections. They printed just 1 book 'Billboard Pop Album Charts: 1965-1969". Really would like to see the 70's and 80's books. If the books are too expensive to create, then put the scanned PDF's on a DCD ROM disk (like 'Hot 100 Charts -- The Sixties')

The only real value this book has is in the discographical information (B-sides, labels and catalog numbers). There were no charts prior to 1940.
