AT40 w/ Ryan and Guest Hosts

With all the talk about Casey and his sudden lack of guest hosts and now the fact that he may very well never have a guest host again, I figure it would be interesting to see everyone's take on guest hosts when it comes to American Top 40 with Ryan.

Remember, since Ryan took over on January 10, 2004....he has already had 2 guest hosts on back-to-back shows. The August 14/15, 2004 show brought actresses and sisters Hilary and Haylie Duff on to host the show. The following week on the August 21/22, 2004 show, singer and the first American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson hosted the show.

I remember when the guest hosts were announced, there was a bit of controversy on whether or not Ryan should have taken 2 straight weeks off so early into his duties as AT40 host. I listened to part of each of those shows, and I felt they were subpar at their best. Between those shows and other various radio shows where they have done this, I fully believe that while actors/actresses and music artists are extremely talented in their field...hosting radio shows should be left to those with radio experience, especially a show like American Top 40.

So, assuming Ryan takes another week or two off at some point this summer, who would you like to see subhost AT40 the next time around? (assuming AT40 isn't done with guest hosts as well) It can be someone realistic or someone completely "out there".

My "out there" guest hosts:

-Conan O'Brien (I am a huge fan of his comedy and I feel he would bring a very interesting touch to the show)

-Shadoe Stevens (even though he has his own new show and probably couldn't do a show for a different company, I would love to hear him do the show just one more time and get some credit he never received. Kind of a closure thing for him as well after the way he left AT40 the last time)

-Will Ferrell (again, one of my favorite comedians who I am sure could put an interesting twist on the show. Or, could be a complete bust if he just can't get into radio.)

-In terms of radio people, any of the "good" CHR jocks out there. I'm not familiar with many, but each city tends to have one or two who will become legendary. I know Cleveland/Philadelphia has Kasper.


My "Realistic" list:

-Idol judge Randy Jackson (even though he starts his WW1 show in September, if contract allowed, I could see him hosting an AT40 as a "warm up". But, I could also see contract strictly forbidding this)

-Any of the latest Idol winners, or a combination for a group of hosts. (Who knows if maybe one of them would be really good with radio)

-In terms of Radio people...any of Ryan's fellow KIIS staffers who they felt would be up to the job.

However, I do believe they will continue to put "big name" people in the position rather than radio people, simply because it is better to promote and many people will want to "hear what they sound like on the radio."

Hreres the problem with why I cant tell who I would want, AT40 now isnt my cup of tea. I listen every once in awhile but the feel of it means very few DJ's would be good for the position. The show is now a "Ryan" type show not like Caseys where it was just reading off of a script and saying you yourself were Casey Kasem. Music Artist I think are a horrible idea for ANY radio show where there is some sort of format, they aren't trained to be a DJ or host a show. I hate it when Dees would leave and turn the show over to some star. Ellen K used to sort of keep the show moving by sitting in with the stars back in the day so it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

All this said, Here is my list of people who should sit in, in no particular order:

1. Brett ;D
2. Ellen K (My #1 choice actually)
3. Elvis Duran
4. David Perry...only so I can see if he calls himself Ryan Seacrest too
5. Adam Curry...although that name will do nothing for the demographics of todays CHR listeners so probably not a good idea

I have two favorite AT40 guest hosts - Gordon Elliott and Joe Cipriano. They’re both freelance artist and to my knowledge, have not signed an exclusivity contract on any Network. So I’m hoping to hear them anytime soon.

First, I must agree that the AT40 guest host stints last summer were subpar at best. In fact, I think that's being generous.

The Randy Jackson idea will never happen...he's about to become Ryan's HAC competition, so why on earth would Premiere spotlight him?

Shadoe Stevens is under contract to a different syndicator, which almost places him in the same boat as Randy, though I think Randy is a more realistic competitor to Ryan as Randy's show will likely end up on more domestic stations than Shadoe's will.

I'm a big fan of this year's American Idol, Carrie Underwood, and would on one hand like to see her guest-host for Ryan. My concern there is that while I think that Carrie can sing the phone book and make even it sound good, we don't know if she's cut out to be a radio host, even for a one-shot deal. Still, it might be worth a try...the novelty of the idea would probably carry it even if she weren't a great radio host.

What would be funny would be to have Simon Cowell sit in for Ryan. Not sure that Simon would do it, as Premiere probably wouldn't let him give any negative critiques on the songs, and that's part of the fun of Simon...his brutal honesty on what he thinks of a particular musical performance.

Joe Cipriano and Gordon Elliot are good choices as hosts, but not to replace Ryan on AT40. Both Joe and Gordon would make better fill-ins for Casey, should Casey ever take a week off.

Ultimately, I have to say that I'm really not sure who I'd put in for Ryan. Of the names mentioned in posts above, I think the best one to do it would be Elvis Duran hands-down.

As I posted above, I think Ellen K would be the best choice, only because she has hosted a countdown show that lasted awhile (Top 30 Hitlist with Elvis did not last much longer after he took over as host I do not believe) and she has been a morning DJ on one of the most listened to stations in America for years. So, she obviously knows what she is doing.

Although if I could really get a promise Perry would call himself Seacrest and say "until next week...Seacrest out!" at the end of the show, not only would I record it, but I would actually skip church that Sunday morning to listen!

Except for Ellen K. I can't find a serious suggestion for an AT40 guesthost here in this topic.
Seems to me a little strange to pull out some of the old guesthosts, wich hosted the show for Casey way back in the 80's or years ago in the 90's.
It seems to be clear that they want to use a young an "hip" guest host for all the teens out there. Others they would not have taken away the show from Casey.
Also I think it has to be someone close to Premiere / Clear Channel or the American Idol thing.
And Shadoe Stevens ?? Forget about it very fast ! He will never do a single word for any of these shows again ! He's gotten rid of each and everything about AT40.

By the way: Was this topic only created to push up the (almost dead ) Ryan Seacrest section again on this board ? Just wondering ..........

Actually, I started it to sort of 'spin off' the "Casey Streak" thread onto AT40 with Ryan to get some feedback on what people thought may happen...and what they would want to happen.

Except for that "Around the world with the Shadoe" jingle from his days on AT40 that he's using on his current show.
