5/14/88: Falling from #78 is Michael Bolton's version of "Dock Of The Bay." So, movin' on as we find a song from Dirty Dancing by a gospel singer from New Orleans named Merry Clayton. The song is simply called "Yes" and it fell from #67 after peaking at #45. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqcGb83SHEo Merry was a member of the Raettes, Ray Charles backup group. She is best known as the female vocalist on the Rolling Stones classic "Gimme Shelter". Her vocals are also prominent on Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" as well as Ringo's "Oh My My". "Yes" tied her highest charting single in the Hot 100. She also reached #45 with her version of the "Baretta" theme "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow". Other Hot 100 hits include her own version of "Gimme Shelter", and the King/Goffin classic "Oh No Not My Baby". She was the Acid Queen in the first London production of "Tommy", and also sang on Tori Amos's hit "Cornflake Girl". Recommend the Oscar-winning documentary "20 Feet From Stardom" which examines the careers of singers like Merry Clayton, Darlene Love, Tata Vega and "unsung" heroines of this nature. Also keep a good thought for her as she copes with traumatic injuries suffered in an auto accident a couple of years ago.
