What happened to remakes on Ryan's AT40?

I noticed, as of lately, there have been a lack of remakes on AT40. In fact, the song "Sledgehammer" by Fifth Harmony, I would have guessed it was a rare remake on AT40 - but it's actually an original song and not a remake of Peter Gabriel's 1986 song. All the songs on AT40 these days are pretty much original songs, though some of them are good.

I don't remember the last time there was a remake on Ryan's AT40 - does anybody know when the last remake was on AT40, and what was the title and artist?

What I Like About You by 5 Seconds of Summer. It was on the chart earlier this year.

As for the reason, remakes haven't been hitting the CHR Top 40. It has nothing to do with Ryan or the show.

I think the lack of remakes on AT40 could be due to the way records are made these days. The song structure of these oldies are not conducive to the production of today's sound. Sampling the hook may be enough to suffice.

Also, most of the songs that artists would like covered are too old and lyrically out-of-date for today's current pop audience.

"The Big Bang" by Katy Tiz was a remake of a former Hot 100 hit.

Prior to that, I think the last remake was "Beggin'" by Madcon in 2009.

Overheard the Siriusxm hits 1 countdown and there was a cover of "You Don't Own Me" (originally by Leslie Gore, Klaus Nomi) this time by someone named Grace. According to Wikipedia it is at 37 on Billboards Mainstream Top 40 so it may be coming to an AT40 near you.

^Yes, it was on AT40 last week and Ryan mentioned that it was a remake of the Lesley Gore song and that you could hear the original at AT40.com.

Coincidentally, it debuted while replacing another remake, Nelly's "Die A Happy Man," which was a #1 country song for Thomas Rhett earlier this year.

The remix of "Die a Happy Man" is still playing on Billboard's Adult Top 40 chart.
