For the first time in months, I listened to AT40 with Ryan this past weekend. And by listen I mean I listened to almost the last 2 hours of the show. Since the show runs parallel to AT20 up at college, I never heard it, and since it runs 6-10am Saturday mornings at home, I hardly ever wake up before 9 or 9:30, and don't even listen to it.
This past Saturday, however, I woke up a little after 8 and didn't have anything to do, so I figured I would head down to the basement and work on some stuff I have been meaning to get done for some time now. And while I did that I listened to AT40.
While in no way shape or form is this a Casey Kasem countdown, I must say, when I finally just put that aside and judged the show on its own merits, it wasn't that bad. While the "No Nuttin's" bothered me, mainly because one of AT40's signatures was introing and outroing everything - it sounds 'right' for CHR radio in 2005. The jingles, while not traditional AT40, sound 'right' for today's CHR radio.
Ryan has a good voice and a good personality. The interviews were good, and only once did he say something where I was like "Ryan....it's AT40". But had he been hosting ANYTHING else I wouldn't have given it a thought. Then I realized that while it is AT40, it's a modern AT40 and not Casey's AT40.
In the end, while the show is completely different than Casey's AT40, it does work for CHR radio and is what it needed. In addition to that, AT40 with Ryan still is about the music, which is what does make AT40 so great.
Then yesterday morning I woke up and listened to Casey do his thing. And I realized, just as Casey himself said in an interview with Deborah Norville shortly after the change...."it's a win-win all the way". Casey is still doing his thing on a format that works better with him anyway, and Ryan is able to do his thing and take American Top 40 to places it wouldn't have been able to go if Casey still hosted it.
While I still miss Casey's AT40, I finally "get it". I mean, I have ALWAYS gotten it, but for the first time I get it, and don't mind it.
So I just had to say, Ryan, nice job.
