Post 1973, Dr. Hook consistently outperformed their peak chart postion in the year end surveys. A sign, I think, of songs that have broad and lasting appeal. I wonder if any 70s act surpassed them in this respect.

This is 1981. AT40 changed their methodology this year. Records received 100 points for #1, 49 points for #2, 48 points for #3, down to 1 point for #50. Positions below 50 were not counted. The survey period is 11/15/80 to 11/14/81. Once again songs late in the year have their entire chart run counted here rather than an estimate which accounts for the difference with this survey and AT40’s actual survey.

1982 was the first year AT40 used their power point formula. This is the methodology was used by AT40 for 1982 through 1984 and in the early 90’s. This is AT40’s power point formula as explained by Rob Durkee: “AT40's power point formula is based on each song's top 50 chart run. One point for a week at #50, 2 for a week at #49 etc. This works OK until you get to #11 (40 points). A few bonus points are given for songs making the top 10. Thus, a song with a week at #10 gets 42 points, 44 for a week at #9, #8 is 46 weeks, #7 48 points and at #6, 50 points. For a week at #5, it's 52, a week at #4 is 54, a week at #3 is 56 points and a week at #2 is 58 points. finally, here's the # of points a song gets for each week at #1...Yes, 80 points for a week at #1, 170 for 2 weeks at #1 and with 14 weeks, it's 2030. Bonus pt. system: 1-80 pts. total; 2-170; 3-270; 4-380; 5-500; 6-630; 7-770; 8-920; 9-1080; 10-1250; 11-1430; 12-1620; 13-1820; 14-2030.” – R. Durkee For 1982, I used the AT40’s power point formula, but rather than estimate songs late in the year, I credited their full chart run. The eligibility period is 11/14/81 through 11/20/82.

Vince, nice work here. I'm curious though as to where Devil's Gun ended up in 1977.

If I had access to all the Top 40 charts from Billboard Hot 100 for each year from the decades of the 60s to 2000-09 ...I would recompute the YE charts as follows:
1) Chart source Billboard Hot 100 2) Survey period: Jan 1 - Dec 31 3) Only credit the songs Top 40 chart run (within survey period) using the inverse points system starting at #40=1pt #39=2 #38=3...#3=38 #2=39 #1=40pts. 4) Apply Bonus points for top ten songs as follows: #1=20pts, #2=18, #3=16, #4=14, #5=12, #6=10, #7=8, #8=6, #9=4, #10=2pts. 5) Award a further 10 points Bonus for a song at #1.
Using this system only 1-70 points are available each week. Therefore if a song theoretically spent 1 week at each position on the top 40 within a calender year, it can only accumulate 940 points.

What I find the most intriguing is how the preponderance of songs that hit #1, 2 or 3 have disappeared from the lower reaches of vince's surveys in the late 70s and early 80s. We'll see if that trend continues. But it must be correlated with how songs chart runs increased during this period. For example, prior to the late 70s, a #1 song would commonly spend less than 20 week on the Hot 100. But in the late 70s and early 80s, it was rare for such a song to spend less than 20 weeks on the Hot 100.

Vince, nice work here. I'm curious though as to where Devil's Gun ended up in 1977. Pete, "Devil's Gun" ranks at about #107. It had 1024 points as of the 11/12/77 cut off and based on the methodology used.

Here is 1984. AT40 had a very late ending survey period this year, 12/10/83 to 12/15/84. Several song had to have had their points estimated in the actual countdown. Amazingly they guessed right on the biggest one, “Out of Touch”, considering how late in the year it hit. Again, the countdown here has the actual chart run counted instead of estimations. 1186 *1 SAY, SAY, SAY Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson (#1, Dec 1983) 976 *2 WHEN DOVES CRY Prince and the Revolution (Warner Brothers) (#1, July) 926 *3 JUMP Van Halen (Warner Brothers) (#1, Feb) 872 *4 WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT Tina Turner (Capitol) (#1, Sept) 828 *5 AGAINST ALL ODDS (Take a Look at Me Now) Phil Collins (Atlantic) (#1, April) 820 *6 FOOTLOOSE Kenny Loggins (Columbia) (#1, March) 792 *7 HELLO Lionel Richie (#1, May) 790 *8 KARMA CHAMELEON Culture Club (Virgin) (#1, Feb) 790 *9 OWNER OF A LONELY HEART Yes (Atco) (#1, Jan) 782 *10 I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU Stevie Wonder (Tamla) (#1, Oct) 777 *11 GHOSTBUSTERS Ray Parker Jr. (Arista) (#1, Aug) 740 *12 OUT OF TOUCH Daryl Hall and John Oates (RCA) (#1 Dec) 739 *13 WAKE ME UP BEFORE YOU GO-GO Wham! The average Top 20 song spent 15 weeks on the Hot 100 in the early 70s. The average Top 20 song spent 17 weeks on the Hot 100 in the mid 70s. The average Top 20 song spent 20 weeks on the Hot 100 in the early 80s. I think the big change occurred in June 1973 when Billboard went to computers & started using airplay data to tabulate chart. This also put an end to a version of the 50 rule. To illustrate: Every #1 song in 1971 fell off the Hot 100 from the Top 40. No song fell from the Top 40 off the Hot 100 during The 80s. The first #1 song of the 70s to fall off the Hot 100 from the Top 40 was by BJ Thomas. The last #1 song of the 70s to fall off the Hot 100 from the Top 40 was by BJ Thomas. www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=3272189#p3272189Also, the Bee Gees last three #1 songs spent their final week on the Billboard singles chart @ #100(1979). Their first #1 song's last week was #28(1971).

1985 AT40 went back to using BB, probably because BB started crediting records full chart runs and awarding projected points for records late in the year. I will continue the rankings with AT40’s power point formula for the rest of the 80’s to show what AT40 may have come up with if they continued doing their own year -end surveys in the late 80’s. For 1985, the eligibility period is 12/22/84 to 12/14/85. Records are credited though the 12/28/85.

This is 1986. The eligibility period is 12/21/85 to 12/6/86. Records are credited through 12/27/86. One thing noticeable here is how the AT40 methodology credits #1 records more than the 1986 BB methodology.

The trend as the 80s get into the latter part of the decade is for it to be tougher to make the year end survey if you don't make the top 10. This is the first time that no song which peaked in the teens made the survey. In fact, only 3 songs that peaked at 11 represent the non-top 10 hits and only 1 such hit ranked higher than 98. BTW, "Hip to be Square" is a #3 hit but the trend which started in the late 70s of top 3 hits being in the mid to upper part of the top 100 continues.

The eligibility period is 11/14/81 through 11/20/82. 1671 *1 PHYSICAL Olivia Newton-John (MCA) (#1, Nov 1981) . . . 280 100 YOU DON'T WANT ME ANYMORE Steel Breeze (RCA) (#16, Nov) I've always been curious - how many points did "One Hundred Ways" by Quincy Jones/James Ingram have, and what number were they ranked? I'm fairly sure they were very, very close to the Top 100.

Hervard, "One Hundred Ways" just missed the countdown. It had 276 points and ranked at #101.
