2 #1 hits squeeze into the survey including one that was left off the Billboard survey because of a miscalculation that vince origially pointed out btw...the Barry White song. And only a #13 song peaked in the teens and 20s. I am thinking that will only happen this year. of course vince is in the process of letting us know as he goes through the year end surveys.

Here is 1976. This one ends up with somewhat of a surprise at #1, since “A Fifth of Beethoven” was only #1 one week. I did not change the methodology from the previous years. The survey period runs 11/22/75 to 11/13/76. Records ascending on 11/20/76 are held over. Records are credited though 11/27/76. Since "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" peaked on 11/20/76, I am holding it over to 1977 as other songs that peaked that week.

We all know AT40 did their own ranking in 1977 and what it was. What I am doing here is making corrections for some mathematical errors and a couple of records that were not included. “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and “Nadia’s Theme” have been added as they peaked during the survey period of 11/20/76 to 11/12/77. Records ascending on 11/20/76 were eligible and their full chart run was counted. The cut off was 11/12/77, with nothing counted after that week. That is the same cutoff AT40 had. The cut off is figured by the placement of “You Light Up My Life”. It’s first five weeks at #1 are counted, an additional week would have put it in the top 20 and one fewer weeks would have put it in the 80’s.

So "Year of the Cat" does not make it. Really makes it placement in the survey by AT40 odd considering it barely made theirs and to save time, they could have ignored it and not many would have raised any eyebrows. They edited it frequently during its chart run but chose not to on the year end show oddly enough.

I think I'm more baffled the theme from Happy Days, which peaked at #5 in June 1976, made neither AT40's nor Vince's revised year end list.

I think I'm more baffled the theme from Happy Days, which peaked at #5 in June 1976, made neither AT40's nor Vince's revised year end list. "Happy Days" just missed BB's Top 100 of 1976. It has 967 points and BB's #100 song, "Country Boy" - Glen Campbell has 968.

We’re up to the RSO year, 1978. Get ready to cringe, I really think AT40 would have put “You Light Up My Life” at #1 if they did their own countdown for 1978. I used the same parameters and methodology used for 1977. The eligibility period runs from 11/19/77 to 11/11/78. Records ascending on 11/19/77 and later were credited for their entire chart run through the cut off of 11/11/78. Records on the chart during the frozen week of 12/31/77, are credited by averaging the week before and week after.

So "Happy Days" is a #5 hit that fell one point short of the top 100. Are "Run Joey Run" and "Mr. Jaws" wtih #4 peaks the highest peaking songs not to make a top 100 of the 70s so far?* Those 3 Bee Gees songs are in the same order that they appeared in on the top 50 of the 70s even though their order is reversed on the Billboard top 100 of 1978. So despite the dubious nature of the decade end survey, AT40 did get the ranking of the Bee Gees SNF hits correct. This is the first year end survey without a song that came at least close to #1 squeezing into the survey. No song below #53 peaked in the top 3 this time.

Some #1's in the early 70's did not make the year's top 100 due to the cut off rather than a short chart run.

This is the final year of the 70’s, 1979. The methodology remains the same. The survey period is 11/18/78 to 10/27/79. Records ascending on 11/18/78 or later are credited for their entire chart run up to the cut off 11/10/79. So those 2 songs that peaked at #4 are the highest peaking songs not cut off to miss the survey. 1979 is another year where all the top 3 hits are well up in the survey. And the top of it makes a lot more sense. With this being the height of disco and that genre accounting for 6 of the top 7 songs, it only makes sense to have a disco song at #1 instead of the only non-disco song on top.

Now for the 80’s. The first five years of the 80’s AT40 did their own year-end countdown. 1980 was when AT40 started estimating chart runs for records late in the year. What I will present here is the same countdown, except, instead of estimating points for records late in the year, the full chart run is counted. This will account for differences from the actual AT40 countdown. AT40 changed their methodology for 1980. It was still 200 points for #1, 99 points for #2, 98 points for #3, down to 61 points for #40. Positions below 40 were not counted. The survey period ran from 11/3/79 to 11/8/80

I think I'm more baffled the theme from Happy Days, which peaked at #5 in June 1976, made neither AT40's nor Vince's revised year end list. I believe it was things like this that lead to AT40 doing their own end of year countdown. Take these 2 songs for example: First song's best 5 weeks on chart: 16,13,12,11,11 Second song's best 5 weeks on chart: 9, 7, 6, 5, 5 Both runs occur at the same time. First song spends one week more on Top 40. That week at #39. Second song is clearly the bigger Top 40 hit, yet at the end of the year the first song is about 25 spots higher on the chart. The first song is "Rhiannon" which was #77 for 1976. The second song is the theme from Happy Days. It is hard to use the Hot 100 chart when the Top 40 is the emphasis. It is hard to sell that #100 on Billboard for 1977 was "Devil's Gun" which spent 2 weeks in Top 40.

So "Year of the Cat" does not make it. Really makes it placement in the survey by AT40 odd considering it barely made theirs and to save time, they could have ignored it and not many would have raised any eyebrows. They edited it frequently during its chart run but chose not to on the year end show oddly enough. Good to see "Time Passages", #7 in December 1978, still makes the 1979 Top 100 at #63, was #79, as I prefer it over "Year of the Cat"!
