This was brought to my attention by a fellow poster here and I just listened to the show on the Iheartradio channel. If you haven't heard the new production pieces with the new voice guy, they have been airing for a month or two and actually sound pretty good.
Not sure when this started though, but now there is a brief production peace with the two voiceovers followed a #40 sounder and we are right into the countdown. No more top 3 recap or show open by Ryan. He does an abbreviated welcome to the show between 40 and 39.
Also, many weeks the closing of the show on the US version is simply a live read commercial for NBC. (The international version which is aired on iheartradio was a thanks to Sam Smith for being a guest and a talk to you next week)
Is this a product of PPM? I'd say so. Never thought we would not hear any opening to the show

Wow. Even during the Shadoe years there was at least a welcome to the show!

I know! Are usually only catch the top 10 of the current weeks show so I don't know exactly how long it has been going on.
The PPM ratings system is destroying it personality driven radio. All it cares about is quick talk breaks

.... and it seems to have ended as of the October 11-12 show. This week, Ryan made the recap of last week's top 3 and introduced the #40.

The announcement in the beginning does mention that it's American Top 40 ("THE BIGGEST COUNTDOWN IN THE WORLD" it says in a booming voice), but not identifying #40 is dumb because it's often a debut that a lot of listeners don't know yet. (At least the two weeks when the songs in that position weren't ID'd they were big hits that had been on for a long time.)
But seriously, not having Ryan or any other host at least say something before starting the music made no sense. It's like contestants on "American Idol" or "The Voice" coming on stage and singing a song with no onstage or on camera introduction, and only afterwards Ryan or Carson appearing and introducing themselves and the singers.

This past weekend, November 1/2, was back to nothing into #40

Even though I do not normally listen to Ryan's AT40, one thing comes to mind. Do you suppose the voice signing on the show, and then going right to #40 with no top 3 recap, and Ryan's voice not being heard until after the #40 song was over was probably due to having longer songs in the first hour of the show? I am thinking the "nothing into #40" is probably more of a timing thing because of longer songs being played in the first hour.
Still, I would not appreciate that format, and I agree, at least Shadoe Stevens handled the show a bit better.

Song lengths have nothing to do with it. It is the less talk PPM style of music radio in 2014

Sort of makes no sense from the "less talk" angle: When he DOES come on before #40, then he generally does NOT come on before #39. And the reverse is also true. So there's really not less talk...it's just a matter of where it comes in.

So there's really not less talk...it's just a matter of where it comes in. Actually I just belatedly heard last weekend's show (November 8-9), and Ryan started with an intro (including clips of last week's top 3) before playing #40. Then after that song he actually back announced it and then said something else going into #39. In other words, the way a countdown should be done, as Casey would have.

So there's really not less talk...it's just a matter of where it comes in. I agree completely. But I think it comes down to the fact that the opening of the show is a pre-produced piece of about 15 - 20 seconds, and then you have Ryan's opening which is probably of similar length. By placing his show open between 40 and 39, you eliminate that minute to minute and a half between the last song the station played prior to the beginning of the show and #40 on AT40. If anyone would have ever told me that something like that could possibly be an issue years ago I would have laughed in their face. But I honestly think that's where they are going with this.
