Nice tribute.
Not to spoil it, but the song they play is by a country music icon and his most famous song – or maybe second most famous, depending on how you perceive the rowdy follow-up – from 1990. I'll just add that that guy can sing real country music, although he has often been criticized for his downfall.

Brian Touching tribute by a man who is a radio legend himself to two of radio's late royalty. pS. Garth Brooks had a "downfall"? In what way....now if you were speaking of Randy Travis.....that's a downfall.

pS. Garth Brooks had a "downfall"? In what way....now if you were speaking of Randy Travis.....that's a downfall. I think it refers to critics of post-1990 country music, and Garth often using elements of arena rock in his shows, sometimes recording rock songs (e.g., Aerosmith's " The Fever"), songs written by non-country performers (e.g., Billy Joel, who wrote " Shameless") and the numerous performers who branded themselves country but often recorded music that was re-packaged pop with only faint elements of country. Personally, I don't think Garth should be to blame, but I'm just the messenger. Brian

Brian, Garth Brooks may have "lapsed out" for a bit, thanks to a pop style album that didn't exactly fly, and a love life that would have made any tabloid hungry for more news. But there are some gems in his collection, and the tune that Bob Kingsley offered to play in salute to two of the gents who created American Country Countdown (which I had wished he'd been able to say, no thanks to Premiere) and gave him a chance to start his own legacy, first as an engineer for original host Don Bowman, then as its long-running host from 1978 to 2006 (I HOPE I got those dates right), "The Dance" was an appropriate song, and still one of Brooks' best songs ever. There are even rock DJs who love Garth Brooks, and I know of one who professed his love for that tune lately, so he had to be doing something right with that. And I respect the dickens out of Kingsley since I caught ACC for the first time in 1981 on a small AM classic country/bluegrass station in King, NC, right after Dick Clark's "National Music Survey," of all things (since there wasn't an available pop station for the latter). And I was very upset Kingsley got a raw deal from Premiere when he left, a la Casey, and Kix Brooks (of Brooks & Dunn) took over-Kingsley's new CT40 isn't the greatest, but I'll take him over Kix Brooks (AND Ryan Seacrest) any day.

Bob and ACC never were with Premiere. They were still with ABC Radio when Bob left for CT40

And what is wrong with Bob's CT40? It's literally a carbon copy of what he did on ACC

Brett, if I remember right, Premiere bought out the last of ABC Radio sometime back, and ACC had just gotten on Premiere when Bob Kingsley had the contract dispute (a la Casey and ABC/Westwood One) that made him finally leave to do the Country Top 40. Like Casey in his final years, Bob just sounds a little winded, but it's still a good show. But as I said, I wish Premiere could have worked out something with Kingsley, since he's just as much an "institution" as Casey Kasem was on the pop chart. And I'm still having to get used to Kix Brooks as the new host of ACC-he's like a weaker version of Shadoe Stevens' attempt to host AT40, even though at least he knows about the country music scene, for sure, being part of one of the biggest duos of the modern country era.

Again. Premiere never had anything to do with ABC Radio or any Bob Kingsley countdown show. ABC Radio was later absorbed into Cumulus Media. Fact.

And those of us predicting a quick demise for Kix turned out to be wrong. His version of ACC has actually lasted longer than Shadoe did as AT40 host. So no hope on the horizon of Bob Kingsley getting back the ACC name for his show. Meanwhile, I've pretty much stopped listening to current country music just like I have current pop. On the rare occasion I hear a few minutes of Bob's show, I still enjoy listening to his stories but as soon as the song comes on, I change the channel, because most of them are pretty awful and fairly interchangeable.

Agreed on it all. I did not think 9 years ago that Kix would last. Like Ryan and AT40, ACC has become a companion program to his daily show, Kickin' it with Kix. And the deal he has with Cumulus, much like Ryan with Premiere/IHM, gets him guaranteed clearance on a large number of stations.
I worked in country radio for two years from 2006-2008. I never enjoyed the format prior to that, really enjoyed it when I worked in it, but didn't follow it once I left. Occasionally I will tune into a few minutes of CT40 if I am in the car just to hear Bob, that is about it.

It'd be nice if somebody created a national countdown show, based Billboard's country airplay chart. Mediabase ISN'T the only chart data there is, folks!
