I'm not talking about where an artist is listed as a duet partner or given a "featuring" credit. I mean artists (before or after they hit the Top 40 themselves) who did uncredited background singing, performing, etc.
One of the most famous examples is Michael Jackson singing on Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me". Also, Michael McDonald sang backup on a number of hits in and around 1980.
There's also:
* Elton John singing on Neil Sedaka's "Bad Blood". * The Bangles singing on Cyndi Lauper's "Change of Heart". * Stevie Nicks singing on John Stewart's "Gold" and Walter Egan's "Magnet and Steel". * A young Fergie was in the choir of children singing on Martika's "Toy Soldiers".

I know there has to be a bunch of these, but I recently found out that George Harrison and Carole King were players on Cheech and Chong "Basketball Jones". Never knew that.

Excellent topic!
If memory serves, Glenn Frey provided background vocals on Hard To Say by the late Dan Fogelberg in 1981.
The 1985 hit All She Wants To Do Is Dance by Don Henley featured lead vocalists Martha Davis [The Motels] and Patty Smyth [Scandal] on backup. Both Belinda Carlisle [lead vocalist of The Go-Go's] and Lindsey Buckingham [Fleetwood Mac] also contributed elsewhere on his Building The Perfect Beast album.

I think that Jon Secada sang backup for Gloria Estefan before he hit with "Just Another Day" in 1992 (unless it was the other way around).
And Mariah Carey sang backup on "I Still Believe" for Brenda K. Star becoming the #1 act of the '90s.

I think Stevie Nicks was also on "Whenever I Call You Friend" by Kenny Loggins.
Linda Ronstadt was on The Dirt Band's "An American Dream". Nicolette Larson was on The Dirt Band's "Make a Little Magic"
Bryan Adams was on most, if not all, of Glass Tiger's hits.

Does Toto count? Although they didn't perform as Toto per se, various members did session work for a lot of projects. Boz Scaggs' Silk Degrees album and, of course, Michael Jackson's Thriller being the two that immediately pop into my mind.
Speaking of Thriller, there's the Eddie Van Halen solo on "Beat It." Janet & LaToya Jackson were two of the P.Y.T.'s on "P.Y.T." Louis Johnson of The Brothers Johnson played bass on "Billie Jean" and Rod Temperton(formerly of Heatwave) played synthesizers on the title cut, which he also wrote.

LOVE this topic so hope you don't mind one more before I crash for the night. Andrew Gold played the guitar solo on Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good." I have more, but don't want to hog the thread, especially since I'm new to the board.

On the subject of albums, I always thought it was weird that Toni Tennille sang backup on Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album. Those are two acts you wouldn't think would go together.

The AT40 shows that I think set the record for this type of billing were those of 5/23, 5/30 and 6/6/81. One of these was already mentioned. But you had "Ai No Corrida" by Quincy Jones but the vocals were done by Dune, "Is It You" by Lee Ritenour but the vocals were by Eric Tagg, "What are We Doing in Love" as mentioned above and "Just the Two of Us" by Grover Washington, Jr. but the vocals were done by Bill Withers. And there were 2 groups in the J. Geils Band mode where the lead singer is someone else, Santana and the Alan Parsons Project.

There's also: * Elton John singing on Neil Sedaka's "Bad Blood". Also John Lennon's "Whatever Gets You Through The Night." Graham Nash also sang backup on many songs (Jackson Browne "Doctor My Eyes," Dan Fogelberg "Part Of The Plan," James Taylor "Mexico" and probably others I'm forgetting) sometimes with David Crosby.

In 1992, Lisa Keith sang backup on "The Best Things In Life Are Free" before she had her own hit "Better Than You" a year later.

From this week's 80s show where Casey mentions Stephens Stills' 2 top 40 hits. The following artists sang backup on those songs.....Rita Coolidge, David Crosby, Mama Cass, Graham Nash and John Sebastian.
