^Speaking of sports, in the 7/21/01 AT40, Casey says Jessica Simpson is from the home of baseball's Rangers, basketball's Mavericks, football's Cowboys and soccer's the Burn. An MLS reference on AT40 back when it barely registered on the sports radar screen? Wow and what about hockey's Stars who had won a championship only a couple years earlier...interesting. BTW, they are not called the Dallas Burn anymore! Ironic since in 98 when he introduced one of the Orlando boy bands he mentioned they were from the state that was home to...and he proceeded to list every pro team in the state but one....the Jaguars

The show from this date in 1978 is currently playing in my office right now.
I've now moved on to the AT40 from 7/24/99.

Two to do today from this date. First up is 1977, followed by 1988.
Upon hearing the first hour of the 7/23/88 show, replete as it was with drastically edited versions of songs and a "Long Distance Dedication" that took up over six minutes of run time, I detest the "LDD" segments even more than I ever did. And THAT is saying something.

I just hate when they shorten stuff to fit in extras like LDD's and such. I don't mind them otherwise, but losing part of a song I like for that kinda sucks.
Then there was the week in 1970 that they played both sides of George Harrison's hit, left out Share The Land as a result, but had time for other extras.
Anyhow, today I'm doing the last 2 hours of ACC Top 100 of 1982 & then AT40: 7-20-74.
I gotta look around, the July portion of my AT40 collection is kinda lean.

7/25/92 when 13 years and a month after it first happened, for the second time in AT40 history, female artists rule the top 5. Madonna made it happen with a 7-2 rocket toward the top with the song that always sends chills down my spine, "This Used to be My Playground". And in an ironic twist, the one who held her off the #1 position broke a tie she just created the previous week between the two for most weeks at #1 by a female artist in AT40 history with 21 weeks. That would be Mariah Carey with "I'll be There". As Shadoe said, Madonna was likely to change that fact the next week. But it did not happen as TUTBMY actually fell to #3 and never rebounded back to 2 or 1. Between R&R, the Hot 100 and AT40, this was the only 1 of the 3 charts in which Madonna did not hit #1 with that song. Bizarre but she would outdo her climb to #2 without hitting #1 the next time out as "Erotica" debuted on AT40 at #2 and also failed to reach the top. Strange stuff in 1992 huh!

Going today with 7-24-82. Normally don't like going with the same month twice within, but 82, 80, 78 & 72 are all time favorites so they get a pass...
Then probably subjecting my passengers to one of my shows to be able to test run it. Gotta check for mistakes after all... Lol

7-27-85...Casey made a couple mistakes early on but said something late that he usually doesn't say. In the first hour, he said Billy Joel was up 9 notches to 31. I knew that was a mistake the moment I heard it because he had said that Kenny Loggins' "Forever" was one of the droppers. Since I already know that is one of the great songs that peaked at 40, I knew Joel could not have been up the 9 notches as that would have put HIM at 40. Indeed, he was at 39. Casey also said that Kool & the Gang had hit #1 in late 1980 with "Celebration". But it was in Feb 1981 that they did that. This has got to be the most common mistake Casey makes, saying a song that hit #1 in Jan or Feb hit #1 in the prior year. Strange because for me, I have made that mistake maybe once or twice over the years. But then late in the show, he said Tears for Fears made the most powerful move in the top 40 with "Shout" moving 9-2. Not the biggest mover, that was "The Power of Love" at 21-11. Good call there because a move of 9-2 really is more powerful than 21-11 even if it was the latter that seemed to have all 'the power'. (they both hit #1 of course)

I just finished 7/26/86 - a great countdown, IMHO. A few chart firsts from that week: The first time a group was replaced at number one by its former lead singer (Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" knocked out Genesis' "Invisible Touch"); and, the first act to acquire its first three top 10 hits in three different decades (The Moody Blues, doing so with "Your Wildest Dreams" the week prior).
In all, there are 10 chart-toppers, a pair of runners-up, along with four songs that reached a peak of number three in this survey.

Doing 7-28-79.
Wondering what Palmyra high school wrote the dedication since there is a Palmyra near me. Casey never says what state.
The edit at the end of the Joe Jackson record is jarring!
But still, a good show!

Right now, it's 7/27/74. I just heard "Fish Ain't Bitin'" by Lamont Dozier. I never realized the lyrical content of this song was so political. It's a great song. I can't believe it wasn't a bigger hit.

Like many political songs, this did have an expiration date of sorts, though one that came up pretty fast. 8/10/74 was its last week in the top 40, and also Tricky Dick's last week in the White House.
