I just got done listening to the Top 60 of 2005, and if you already don't know or don't want to know what #1 for the year was, stop reading now....

I, too, have listened to the show. Before doing so, I tried to predict the Top song of 2005 and came up with "You and Me" by Lifehouse in the latest one. Boulevard of Broken Dreams was #1 in a chart I figured in mid-November, however.

I hoped it would be Lifehouse at the Top, but I didn't need any calculation to know the results before. If a BIG number 1 song comes in early in the year, it is always set to be the top song of the year. And for this past year, it could only be "Boulevard"
Unfortunately Lifehouse came in too late 2005. They will be charting well in the YE charts of 2006 as well. Probably the same sad destiny like Maroon 5 "She will be loved" ...... 2 high YE positions, but not enough in a single year to enter the top position.
By the way: It's the second time for Lifehouse, that they missed the YE top spot for just a blink of an eye. They were also close in 2001, with the song they had also on in 2002.

I thought Rob Thomas would have had it with Lonely No More (partially because I prefer it to Boulevard). Either way, you make a great point Radioman...the long running number one's in the first 4-5 months of the calendar year are the sure-fire winners for that year-end spot. However, 2004 was a bit different, as the 2004 YE chart was a toss up between Here Without You, This Love, and The Reason...and I honestly thought it would have been Here Without You since it a) charted at the beginning of 2004 and b) was the longest running number one of the year. So that just goes to show you.
As for the rest of the 2005 YE show...my big surprises were
-- Santana & Michelle Branch missing it all together with "I'm Feeling You" (#61 on the R&R year-end) -- Tim McGraw at # 50 with "Live Like You Were Dying", a song that never hit the Top 20 (Black Eyed Peas at # 55 didn't surprise me as much) -- One Thing, Lady, Dare You To Move, Look What You've Done, On The Way Down, Somebody Told Me, and 1985 all did much better than I thought -- Hollaback Girl, We Belong Together, Listen To Your Heart, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Good Is Good, and Photograph did not do as well as I would have thought.

I just relistened to the AT20 top 60 of 2005 show, this past weekend.
The #43 song was "Good is Good" by Sheryl Crow. Casey mentions before the song, "...the future Mrs. Lance Armstrong...." We all know that didn't happen.
Also during the first 3 hours (part one that orginally aired on Christmas weekend) more of the number X jingles were used than normal. The last 3 hours, (orginally aired on New Years weekend) did not use the number X jingle as much. Probably, no more than the number X jingles used on a regular AT20 show.

Speaking about relistening to the AT20 YEC 2005, I was quite happy they decided to use some more AT20 YEC Extras from some different years than just those they used a year ago.
Can anyone tell me, however, which song was the #1 song of the year on R&R Pop chart for 1987? I know the ones that topped AT40's and Billboard's Hot 100 but what about this one.
I really wonder if they ever use it if it was Bon Jovi or U2, while I understand that they would probably never use 1989's R&R Pop #1 song by Janet Jackson.

According to this link: www.alaskajim.com/charts/yearlysingles/1987.aspit's Whitney's Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)". Personally, I would prefer if the extras of the year-end show came from songs that were ranked under the Top 60, as in the 2003 year-end show. Since it's a year-end show, the music ought to focus on that past year.

Thanks for the answer and link. Basically, I agree that the YEC should rather reflect the year gone by. Anyway, we'll see whether they return back to this kind of YEC extras in 2006, otherwise they will have to repeat almost everything played as extras in the past two YECs.
The only funny thing for me on 2005 year-end show was that 'Iris' by the Goo Goo Dolls was played as 1998's song of the year which was OK, but then Natalie Imburglia's 'Torn' was played as 1998's #1. I can only guess that this song was the #1 on R&R HAC chart, but wasn't it 'Iris' topping AT20 for that year as well as AT40, probably based on AT20 tabulation not on the real R&R YE chart?

Casey noted that Iris was the number one pop song of 1998, whereas Torn was simply the number one song of 1998, which means (in my mind at least) the number one Hot AC chart.

He did that for several years, but then in 2004, they just played number one songs of past years, plus, didn't they also play a few random number one songs in the second half?

Yeah, the 2004 show featured a few non "number one of the year" YEC extras.

I said this over at the Pulse board as well, but in my opinion, I would have rather heard 1999's #1 Hot AC song ("Slide" by the Goo Goo Dolls) in place of "Iris". Throughout the countdown, the #1 songs of 1996-2004 were played as extras, and the absence of 1999's #1 HAC song left a hole.
I blame Premiere on that one. It seems like they were trying to use the song that's both AC and Hot AC friendly. But it's ok...I'm gonna lose any sleep on it...especially in March.

Yeah, the 2004 show featured a few non "number one of the year" YEC extras. I thought so. Therefore, while I much preferred the year-end shows from several years back (with "songs that just missed the Top 60"), I liked this year's extras better than the ones on the 2004 show because they had a common thread, in that they were year-end number ones. Just playing random number one songs just doesn't cut it. (An AT20 show from the fall of 2004 did something very similar for their spotlight).

Yeah, it would have made more sense to play "Slide", but I like "Iris" better. Moreover, I figured that "Slide" would be the #1 CHR song of 1999, but Sugar Ray's "Every Morning" won the gold that year. I wonder if they would have played "Slide" had it been the top Pop song of '99.

Well, anyway, have any of you a copy of 1998 HAC YE countdown as I remember to read on some collector's website that 'Iris' was the #1 song of the year not only on CHR/POP AT40 but also on HAC AT20. That's why I wondered about how they came out with Imburglia's 'Torn' for that year, even though for me, personally, 'Torn' was not only the #1 song of that year but also the whole decade.
On the other hand, I agree that to make it compact 'Slide' might have been a better choice for YEC extra.
