I remember hearing on a countdown program last year that Gotye possibly could have the first #1 song to feature a xylophone. He did hit #1 eventually.
Well, if it's referring to Rick Dees' WT40, most likely. But I was listening to my iPod yesterday, and I discovered that Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "Lost In Emotion" from the fall of 1987 did feature a xylophone at the end of the song, and that went to #1 on AT40, even for just one week.
I wonder if "Lost In Emotion" was #1 on Rick Dees' WT40 as well? And did Ryan Seacrest ever mention anything about Gotye's "Someone I Used To Know" becoming the first #1 song to feature a xylophone when that song was climbing the chart?
It's hard to believe that it took a quarter of a century for a song to feature a xylophone and hit #1 on AT40.

"Lost In Emotion" went to number one on the R and R charts on 10/10/87, so I'm sure it was number one on RD...possibly this week back in 1987. Good catch on that! Some other big songs to feature xylophones include "Hungry Heart" and "Cruel Summer" for starters. Also, I think, "Moonlight Feels Right".

I guess if Rick Dees mentioned the possibility of Gotye's song being the first #1 to feature a xylophone, I guess he completely forgot all about "Lost in Emotion", since it was extremely rare for him to have played the song or even a snippet of it after its chart run in 1987.
But then again, Rick Dees' WT40 no longer depends on R&R, since that publication folded after the June 5, 2009 issue.

He'd still reference what happened on his chart history if anyone researched it.

There was an AT40 in the late summer of 1987 when Casey mentioned the xylophone heard in the song (something like, "Well, it's not that often when you hear a xylphone on a Top 40 record, is it?"

It was the 8-22-87 show, and it was the first week that "Lost In Emotion" was on the Top 40. Good memory!

Also "Hold Me Now" by The Thompson Twins. I thought of that the other day...I think Allanah Currie plays the xylophone in the video.

I might have the first song featuring a xylophone that made AT40. How about "Cecilia" by Simon & Garfunkel? Yes, its chart run was done by the time AT40 started off, but it was on the year-end chart at #49.

There is a video showing him performing this song in 1988 when he would have been 8 years old. And it does have an 80s feel to it, quite different from the 2011 version. Did anyone hear this song in the 80s? I am also perplexed as to why the wikipedia entry for the 2011 version makes no reference to the 80s version.

I realize that "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck peaked at # 3 in August 1976 but it's worth a mention.

The Longer Version of Star Wars Theme by Meco featured a xylophone--and that hit #1 in October, 1977.

How many of those were marimbas, and how many are xylophones? IIRC, Casey made it a point to differentiate the two when Lisa Lisa hit #1.
