A nine hour long campus-wide power outage all day yesterday forced classes to be cancelled and all meetings and responsibilities to be postponed. What's one to do, except bring out the battery operated stereo and listen to old Casey shows!
I was listening to several of the "AT" shows from the last 5 years, and noticed that the shows from 2003-2005 sound a bit different than those from the 2000-2002 era.
It seems as if something has been done to "improve" the sound of Casey's voice since the 2003-ish shows.
The shows from the second half of this 5 year old decade (that's a Casey-ism if there ever was one) project Casey's voice a bit more; giving it a crisper, more annunciated sound. In the earlier Premiere-era shows, Casey sounds a bit washed-out and the quality and volume of his voice projection just didn't seem nearly as strong. Is this simply new digital technology that the shows have begun to use that was unavailable a few years ago? Or are they doing something different to Casey's voice? (I know there are debates on whether or not Westwood One used a special pitch alteration on the shows). I just think the quality of Casey's voice sounds very much improved on the newer shows of the Premiere-era.
And, to this day, you would never guess the man behind the mic was in his 70's. There was a brief discussion of Casey in my Media and Society class, and everything he has contributed to the world of radio and mass media. My professor, who is 84, and worked in radio for many years, is very much like Casey when it comes to staying youthful and active. Must be something about the field that keeps you youthful (although one would think the stress would do you in much earlier!)
