Is the longest gap between #1 records still held by The Beach Boys? "Good Vibrations", December 1966/"Kokomo" November 1988, or just shy of 22 years. Since I stopped following the singles charts around the mid-90s or so, I don't know if their record still stands. I know for sure that Cher's time was longer according to the Billboard charts, 25 or so years. However I'm pretty sure that "Believe" in 1999 only went to number two on American Top 40. Thanks. "Half-Breed" reached #1 in October of '73, so it would have been 25-26 years between it and "Believe".

Billy Ocean had 8 years from his first hit, "Love Really Hurts Without You" to his second hit, "Caribbean Queen".
General Public had 9 years from their first hit, "Tenderness" to their second hit, "I'll Take You There".
Tracy Chapman had 8 years from her first hit, "Fast Car" to her second hit, "Give Me One Reason".
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony had 11 years from their first hit, "Tha Crossroads" to their second hit, "I Tried".
Tammy Wynette had 24 years from her first hit, "Stand By Your Man" to her second hit, "Justified And Ancient".
Dan Hill had 9 years from his first hit, "Sometimes When We Touch" to his second, "Can't We Try". His duet partner on that song, Vonda Shepard, herself took 11 years to get a second hit, which she did with "Searchin' My Soul".
Golden Earring had 9 years from their first hit, "Radar Love" to their second, "Twilight Zone".

It's kind of a stretch, but there was 12 years between Bush's first hit "Glycerin" and lead singer Gavin Rossdale's hit "Love Remains The Same."

The Countours had 2 Top 40 hits (although the same song re-released) that were nearly 26 years apart.

So 24 years between #1's.

Believe did hit #1 on Billboard's Hot 100. However, after, Nov 23 1991, AT40 no longer used that chart. By 1999, AT40 was using Radio and Records and "Believe" only reached #2 there.

While there was only an eleven year gap between his first and second solo hits away from the Tijuana Brass, Herb Alpert went to #1 with both singles. The first had vocals and the second was an instrumental.

Stretching back to the pre-AT40 days, there was a 13-year gap between "The Unicorn" (1968) and "Wasn't That A Party"(1981) by the group once known as The Irish Rovers.

Ted Nugent first hit with the Amboy Dukes in 1968 with "Journey To The Center Of The Mind". He didn't hit again for another 9 years with the solo "Cat Scratch Fever".
Carole King had 9 years from her first hit, "It Might As Well Rain Until September", to her second, "It's Too Late".
De La Soul hit the top 40 in 1989 with "Me, Myself and I". It took them 16 years to hit again, this time appearing with Gorillaz on "Feel Good Inc".
