Here are some misheard lyrics from the mid/late-1960s, when I was age 5 to 7: . CHERRIES IS THE WORD instead of "Cherish" in the Association hit . A-MORNING-A-DAH 11/66 what I thought the singer in the New Vaudeville Band was saying at the end of "Winchester Cathedral" . KOOL-AID ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON 06/67 instead of "Groovin'" (Young Rascals) . AND WENDY AND STORMY EYES 06/67 "Wendy" instead of "Windy"--I had a next-door neighbor named Wendy at the time. 05/68 I thought, in "Mrs. Robinson," Simon & Garfunkel were singing about a geometric shape called a "sympathetigon" instead of "sympathetic eyes". Later in the song, I thought they were saying "Going to the camp on today's date" instead of "candidates' debate" because neither of the latter two words were in my vocabulary yet in May 1968. Maybe a sympathetigon is a word describing the geometric shape of centerfield at the old Yankee Stadium. So the song is really all about the Yankees. And maybe this explains why David Bowie said “gotta get a sympathetigon” in Fame, because he was mourning the loss of that shape due to the reconstruction at that time. When the song was current, I (and many others I am sure) always thought about Kennedy and McCarthy when they sang about the candidates debate. I don’t know if they ever debated, but in May that was the big contest, between those two. So maybe the song is really all about Marilyn.

I was only 10, but was following the race closely. Had RFK lived and won the nomination, I don't think Nixon would've debated him, based on his debate performance against JFK 8 years earlier. Factoid: Voters who heard the '60 debates on radio thought Nixon had done better than JFK, but not TV viewers. Shows the power of the tube.

I agree that Nixon would have been crazy to try to debate RFK. They were both very very smart, but RFK had the edge. They both had demons but Nixon had more. Nixon did do pretty well in those supposedly spontaneous shows that Roger Ailes put together. Anyway 1968 looks like a walk in the park now compared to the last few years, especially the last few weeks, and most especially the last two days! Talk about scabs being ripped off and wounds being reopened! It’s a good thing to re-examine our views about things, but this is so raw and painful. Or maybe 1968 was worse but I was just young and blissfully oblivious.

Someone said Macbeth in a theatre. Sorry, still not getting it. Talking about Rock and Smith. It’s like a Jack Ruby moment, only with relations between races and genders thrown in to the mix. Scabs form for a reason. Is it a good reason or bad? I don’t know anymore. This thing is radioactive and Putin must be taking comfort from it. I guess it’s bad luck to say Macbeth in a theatre and this was instant karma.

Thanks. I just thought it was hilarious. Didn't give it nearly the import that you do, I guess. To me it was just a minor story involving self-absorbed celebs that I don't care about. Wouldn't have even known there was an Academy Awards show otherwise. Like many, couldn't care less about them, or movies in general, anymore.

And not that you asked for this or even thought this, but I'm going to try not to inject my "profound" serious observations into this otherwise very entertaining thread going forward. I apologize to everyone for having done this on multiple occasions. This is why people (me) should see therapists. Therapists get paid for listening. Hey not just this thread, maybe the whole site, if I can restrain myself.

Thanks for the interesting, fascinating reply to my post from nearly four years ago (I must have had that Simon & Garfunkel song on my mind because it was around the 50th anniversary. I had some really unusual misheard lyrics from back in the day. I should post some more of those in this thread.

There are at least two Phil Collins songs where he says "Oh Lord" ("In The Air Tonight" and "Another Day In Paradise"). I always thought he was saying "Hold on" in both songs! Wow--I thought it was "Hold on" for 41 years and 32 and a half years, respectively. Wow, I never knew this.

In fact, I haven't even been to a theater in over three years, and I can't even remember what movie I saw. I used to go to one movie a month with my mother, who was a big movie buff and tried to get me up to speed on movie trivia. And I know even less about TV. I am a big music-listening buff (like most people on these boards), and watching TV or movies would cut into music time.

I just thought of another misheard lyric involving a geometric shape--it is from Bruce Cockburn's only top-40 hit in the U.S., "Wondering Where the Lions Are" "Some kind of hexagon's got a hold of me" instead of "Some kind of ecstasy's got a hold on me" Cockburn has made me personal chart quite a few times, including one tune in 2019 or '20.

Here's an example of lyric sites not really knowing... Rapture by Blondie: In the rap part after "Flash is fast, flash is cool...." "François c'est pas, Flash ain't no dude" - Lyricfind "Francois sais pas, Flashe no deux" - Azlyrics I don't know what it is but neither of these make sense, no? There was no lyric sheet with Autoamerican, so I guess it's anybody's guess. I lost faith in online lyrics sites once I realized that not only are they unreliable, but they also copy from one another. There is a lyric from Shaggy's song "Angel" that is the same on every single lyrics site and yet I'm 100% sure is not correct.

When Dean Martin sang "if I had it in my power" in Everybody Loves Somebody I thought he said "if I had a million in my power".
I was thinking a million dollars, not a million people or anything like that. I was seven years old and much more interested in toys my parents couldn't afford than politics or any of that stuff.
