I noticed on this weekend's AT20 that the optional extra in Hour 3 has moved from the 2nd segment of the hour to the 4th segment, and is actually played in between the segment where # 1 is teased, and where # 1 is played...which I particularly do not like.
I also noticed this in Hours 1 and 2, something is teased in Segment 3, then the Segment 4 extra segment is played before the next hour begins. It sounds good if you don't have the extras, but the extras sound very out of place now.
Also, I noticed the Hour 3 Segment 4 option sounded like it had network commercials in it. Unless WXXO/WOXX decided to run all of their own network spots to make it sound like they were Casey's spots.
I think it sounded better the old way. No optional extras between a tease and a story, and not between the number one tease and the number one segment.

speakingof these extras? Is this some new radio show phonomenon? Dees's show is not owned by CC but I believe he has them on his now too the exact same way!

After just hearing the evening replay, I am now under the impression no network commercials were added into the optional segment of Hour 3.

I hope these extra segments are either a passing fad or stations, figure out they are there and quit airing them, or mix them up rather than play them in exact same spots every week!

I wouldn't want them to stop being aired. That's three songs per week, which would probably average to, at minimum, 10 more minnutes of commercials during each show.
The way they do it in Hours 1 and 2 is fine by me, and if those weren't aired I would miss them terribly because there would be no "Countin' Down The Hits with Casey Kasem" jingle bed that we all know and love.
As for Hour 3, I don't care where it is, as long as it isn't in between the number one tease segment and the number one segment. As long as nothing in the previous segment is teased (this rule applies for all 3 hours), you don't really notice them anyway. And i'd rather hear Casey talk about 3 countdown extras and listen to 3 more songs than listen to 10 minutes of local ads I hear all throughout the week anyway.

I comecede that point, on AT10 and AT20 you do not really notice them because it is doen as a real segment, on the other hand, the ones on AT40 stick out like a sore thumb.

I have yet to hear these optional extras on any show other than Casey's two shows. Could you perhaps give me more of an explanation as to how they work on Seacrest and Dees? I just assumed it was the same...an extra segment, sans network commercials, somewhere in the hour.

Dees if it really does happen, I dont know because I havent heard his show this year...I have recorded it and put it on the computer, I just havent gotten around to listening yet.
Seacrest however, is at the top of every hour; there's an intro just like AT40 is coming back out of a commercial, Seacrest introduces the song, he then outros the song and has something usually to say along with it whether it's relevent or not, then it cuts off. No we'll be right back, no outgoing jingle, nothing, so it would go something like this.....
(song is ending) Seacrest: Thats Independent Women by Destiny's Child, #1 this week 4 years ago; I hate that women are soooo independent
that's it; cuts off at that point, and then the affiliates I have heard do one of two things, station ID themselves AGAIN like they did 5 minutes earlier, or just start the next AT40 segment immediately.
Like I have said, I concede the point that AT10/20 you may not be able to tell the difference because #1. they play extras all throughout the show, and #2 the segment actually ends like you would expect one to. AT40 on the other hand does not. I believe Dees is a lot like AT40's but when I finally listen to one of his shows this year I will let you know if indeed he is doing them and how they are done.

I've noticed, WLEG Froggy Radio does not play the optional segment in hour 3. You only hear the regular 4 segments in the last hour.
Are there any other stations that don't air the optional segment? I know WRVF with AT10, the optional segments are aired for hours 1 and 2. However, WRVF will also not air the option segment from hour 3.

I was listening to the 4/2/05 AT20 show, and noticed the following:
On the optional extra at the end of hour 1, Casey actually teases the upcoming LDD. I believe this is the first time Casey actually teases anything in an optional segment.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. I also noticed it on American Top 10 several weeks ago.
I have yet to come across an affiliate for either show that does not air the segments in Hours 1 and 2. However, the stations appear to be about 50/50 on airing the segment in Hour 3.
