I don't believe this has been covered before on the AT40 board, so here goes: Does anyone know what song(s) placed in the most individual positions in the top 40, within its unique chart run (i.e., not including remakes or re-releases) during Casey's era? Longevity would likely be a primary factor here (e.g., "I Go Crazy"). Curious.

Let's start with an obvious pick: Paul Davis' I Go Crazy, by a quick check of UMD:
10/29/77 came on at 37, then: 34-31-29-28-25-25-23-23-23-21-21-19-18-16-14-12-11-9-8-7-7-7-28 to 35 on 4/15/1978. By my count, that makes it being at 18 different chart positions in the Top 40 over 25 weeks.
Looking at it's overall Hot 100 performance, it spent weeks on the rise at 87-78-68-58-47-45-43-41-41 and on its fall 63-63-83-90-95-99, so it spent time at 31 positions on it's whole Hot 100 run.

"Gloria" started out on 9/4/82 at 39.
It then went 39-34-30-26-21-18-17-14-13-9-4-4-2-2-2-3-5-5-7-11-15-34-out on 2-5-83
So 17 different spots for "Gloria"...close to Paul Davis, but that pause at 34 prevented it.

Here are some other songs that had 17 chart positions:
A Fifth Of Beethoven » Walter Murphy Angel In Your Arms » Hot Keep On Loving You » REO Speedwagon Jessie's Girl » Rick Springfield You And I - Eddie Rabbitt/Crystal Gayle
Love's Theme » Love Unlimited Orchestra spent only 16 weeks in Top 40 but was in 16 different chart positions:
33-21-17-13-10-6-3-1-2-5-8-11-15-26-29-32

Jmack19, It's impressive that "Love's Theme" charted at exactly 16 UNDUPLICATED spots within the top 40; that might be such a record.

This isn't a record for most chart positions in the Top 40, but it is a notable chart run:
100-99-91-79-73-69-65-60-59-53-53-54-50-37-35-42-50-44-52-45-32-31-26-23-31-23-21-23-21-21-19-16-17-21-31-34-38-52
Hot 100 chart action for Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me". Spent 4 weeks at #21 [weeks 27, 29, 30 & 34], 3 weeks at #23 [24, 26, 28], 3 weeks at #31 [22, 25, 35]. Some of it was due to chart methodology changes at the time.
