A while ago, I wondered if there were any artists that had a song peak at each position within the top 10. I found that it was an extremely short list, and not who you would think. As far as I can tell 2 acts did it on their own, while 3 others had to combine their band and solo careers to achieve this goal.
Starting at the top, the band with the most #1 singles, The Beatles, provided the most ironic and fascinating story. Running down their top 10 records :
#1 - 20 times
#2 - Twist & Shout, Do You Want To Know A Secret, Yellow Submarine
#3 - Please Please Me, Nowhere Man, Something
#4 - She's A Woman, Lady Madonna
#5 - Day Tripper
#6 - 1995-96: Free As A Bird
#7 - 1976: Got To Get You Into My Life
#8 - Strawberry Fields Forever, Ballad Of John & Yoko
#10 - P. S. I Love You
The Beatles never had a single peak at number 9...number 9...number 9!
When you look at the Beatles solo careers, John peaks at #9 with "#9 Dream" of course. Ringo did it too, peaking at #9 with "Back Off Boogaloo".
You would think that Paul would have done it, but he hit #10 four times ("Hi, Hi, Hi", "Helen Wheels", "Maybe I'm Amazed [Live]", "Take it Away"). None of them could peak one notch higher. George just missed as well, as "What Is Life" reached #10.
As a final touch of irony, Julian Lennon's first single "Valotte" peaked at ...#9.
How about Elvis? Elvis never had a single peak at #7 or #10. Neither did Whitney Houston.
Rolling Stones? They never had a song peak at #4.
Hall & Oates? They never had a song peak at #10, although "So Close" was so close, peaking at #11.
Chicago? Chicago had 6 songs peak at #3 as well as 3 number 1 songs. No songs peaked at #2 or #8. Peter Cetera hit #8 featured on Az Yet's version of "Hard To Say I'm Sorry".
Elton John never had a song peak at #3 or #10.
Motown: The Supremes had so many #1 records , but they were missing 4 positions in the top 10. Diana Ross solo covered the #8 position. The Temptations are missing #5 and #9. Stevie Wonder just missed; he never had a song peak at #6.
Then there's Marvin Gaye:
#1 - I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Let's Get It On, Got To Give It Up (Pt.1)
#2 - What's Going On
#3 - Sexual Healing
#4 - Too Busy Thinking About My Baby
#6 - How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You
#7 - That's The Way Love Is, Trouble Man
#8 - I'll Be Doggone, Ain't That Peculiar
#9 - Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)
#10 - Pride And Joy
Alone, Marvin is missing #5. However Marvin Gaye's duet with Tammi Terrell, "Your Precious Love" peaked at #5.
John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and Marvin Gaye are the 3 artists who managed to have a song peak at each position within the Top 10 when combining group and solo careers.
At the beginning I mentioned that 2 acts did it on their own. They are:
Madonna...
#1 - 12 times
#2 - 6 times
#3 - True Blue, Erotica, 4 Minutes
#4 - Lucky Star, La Isla Bonita, Don't Tell Me
#5 - Angel, Dress You Up, Ray Of Light
#6 - You'll See
#7 - Deeper And Deeper, Hung Up
#8 - Keep It Together, Don't Cry For Me Argentina, Die Another Day
#9 - Rescue Me
#10 - Borderline, Hanky Panky
...and Aretha Franklin
#1 - Respect
#2 - Spanish Harlem, Chain Of Fools
#3 - Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do), Freeway Of Love
#4 - Baby I love You
#5 - (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone, Day Dreaming
#6 - The House That Jack Built, Bridge Over Troubled Water
#7 - Think, Who's Zoomin' Who
#8 - (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
#9 - Rock Steady, I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)
#10 - I Say A Little Prayer
Both Madonna and Aretha had songs peak at #11, but neither had a song peak at #12.
Hope you enjoyed this!
