In other places: Restored radio shows that plays the charts hits “as it happened” like Classic AT40s or Rick Dees’ weekly top 40. (The only other restored show that I’m aware of is the Wolfman Jack show, unless somebody knows others…) I Forgot about Dick Clark’s “Rock, Roll & Remember” that in the wake of his recent death, has been picked up recently by more stations, although traditionally the music in the program only goes up to the early 1970s. The oldies station “98.1 KISS FM” (The Bay’s Old School) plays mostly, but not exclusively, soul songs from the 70s & 80s. You could look at a sample of their playlist at www.981kissfm.com/iplaylist/playlist.html to see what I mean (although when it comes to classic soul nobody beats WDAS-FM in Philadelphia IMO) FYI, here’s a list of the top-ranked “Classic Hits” format stations in each of the Top 10 broadcast Markets in the US (effectively the biggest oldies’ stations in the country.) The list is updated as I’m typing this: 1.New York, NY (WCBS-FM) (comment: Tony Soprano’s favorite station!!) 2.Los Angeles, CA (KRTH-FM) 3.Chicago, IL (WDRV-FM) 4.San Francisco, CA (KOSF-FM) 5.Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX (KLUV-FM) 6.Houston-Galveston, TX (KGLK-FM) 7.Washington, DC (WBIG-FM) 8.Philadelphia, PA (WOGL-FM) 9.Atlanta, GA (WSRV-FM) 10.Boston, MA (WROR-FM) BTW, my own personal preference among the ones in above list is by far KRTH-FM in LA.

WDRC-FM in Hartford,CT has been an oldies/greatest hits station since September 1986-They initially played hits from 1955-1963 or as they're more commonly known,pre-1964 songs-In the last few years, however, those songs have been phased out-Currently,DRC-FM features the hits from the mid-60's through the late 80's-The most popular show on the station is Ron Sedaille's "All Request Saturday Night" which runs from 7-12 midnight.

So most of the above Top 10 cannot be accessed under ordinary circumstances outside of the US. But WDRV in Chicago, KGLK in Houston, WSRV in Atlanta, and WROR in Boston should be okay to listen to from the UK.

On WDRV-FM Chicago Sundays 7 - 10 AM , "Rock & Roll Roots" is broadcast. The program is focused on music from the 60s and 70s. There are plenty of songs that are not played very often, and it does feature artists that were popular in the Chicagoland area. In May, Bob Stroud, the host will be celebrating the 33rd anniversary of the show being on the air on various stations around the Chicagoland area. His obvious passion and knowledge of the music of this era make the show quite a joy to listen to. If you want to get a taste of the music that's played, playlists are available here: www.wdrv.com/rocknrollroots.phpYou can listen to the show here: www.wdrv.com/live/playerWDRV1.phpMembership in the "Stroud Crowd" is easy. Give the show a listen.

From the 1974 section, they played a song by Joni Mitchell and it was NOT "Help Me", by far her best song.

Dukedeb: Once a month, Bob does "time warps" playing what was popular on the local charts during those weeks. Since the charts by the late 60's/early 70's were pretty much standard all over AM radio, you are correct there are really no surprises there.
On the other weeks, it's a mix. Looking at 2/24/13 for example:
7AM George Harrison - Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) George Harrison - Blow Away Manfred Mann - Do Wah Diddy Diddy Manfred Mann - The Mighty Quinn (Quinn the Eskimo) Rod Stewart - Handbags and Gladrags The Guess Who - Laughing Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels - Little Latin Lupe Lu James & Bobby Purify - Shake a Tail Feather Bruce Springsteen - Rosalita Journey - Wheel In the Sky Santana - Batuka/No One to Depend On 8AM The Beatles - I Need You The Beatles - You Like Me Too Much Canned Heat - Let's Work Together Friend and Lover - Reach Out in the Darkness Simon and Garfunkel - The 59th Street Bridge Song America - A Horse With No Name Deep Purple - Hush The Kinks - Till the End of the Day Three Dog Night - Never Been to Spain Joe Cocker - Feeling Alright Aerosmith - Dream On BTO - Blue Collar 9AM Donovan - Sunshine Superman Moody Blues - Tuesday Afternoon Rolling Stones - Paint It Black Eric Burden and the Animals - Monterey Creedence Clearwater Revival - Travelin' Band The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again The Byrds - So You Want To Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star The Monkees - Tapioca Tundra Crosby, Stills and Nash - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes George Harrison - My Sweet Lord
All I'm saying is that the time warp weeks are a little more toward the standard fare. I will admit in the past few years, management has suggested that he tighten up his play list. Still you do get to hear Mason Proffit's "Two Hangmen", Seatrain's "13 Questions", or Fanny's "Charity Ball" every once in a while.
By the way, if you want to get really deep into classic rock, I might suggest their HD2 commercial-free station "Deep Tracks".

They don't play 80's music, but KYA out of San Francisco (the one-time home of a certain man that used to play a stoner on a cartoon series ;D ) plays a decent mix of 60's and 70's music. One station that does play the 80's is Star 107.9. They're an online-only station based on a short-lived all-80's station in Columbus, Ohio (existed from 1998-2001).

1finemrg, do you know of a nationally syndicated program called ‘Deep Cuts’ or ‘Deep Tracks’? It is not a locally produced show like the one on wdrv. It has a tagline: “When Music Mattered” or something to that effect. It plays soul as well as pop/rock album tracks and lesser known singles from the 70s and 80s. I caught a little part of the show as I was surfing the web on a Sunday afternoon about a month ago, but I can’t find it anymore…

No, but thanks, nevermind. I found it just a short while ago by going through the history tab of my favorites over the last month. It is called “The Deep End w/Nick Michaels” and what I heard was its 4-hour version on KLCM in Montana over the internet. I also discovered its affiliates web-site just moments ago: www.thedeependwithnickmichaels.com/affiliates.htmlNice to hear again the original “Pastime Paradise” from Songs in the Key of Life on this week’s show.

Bart Shore has been doing 1 hour podcasts since 2009. I really enjoy them, but it might not be for everyone. New ones usually drop on Saturdays (Sunday shows), and he also features a "Song of the Day" Monday through Friday. Bart Shore's Time Warp Radio
