Hola, haven't posted on this forum in a while. I think this is probably the best board out of the ones here to post this on, but I did a blog entry recently detailing some of the downfalls of this current incarnation of AT40, as well as a little bit of history of the countdown show. It's nothing new or less frustrating for most of us who don't like Seacrest's hosting already, but I figured it would be good to just get it out there. I hope you enjoy! popgoesthecharts.wordpress.com/2013/01/10/reaching-for-the-stars-the-history-and-future-of-the-countdown-show/

A good read, but you have to give credit where it is due. AT40 is still alive because it has kept up with the times and Ryan and co. are the reason for it. Us chart buffs and Casey fans may not like it, but it is an accurate chart of what the affiliates are playing, and that is what counts right now. The show caters to its audience, just as it has for 40+ years. The majority of us just aren't the core audience. And when I do catch the show, it doesn't bother me.
I also think you were a tad harsh toward Ryan. He guest hosted four shows in 2003 and I thought he did a fine job. I have never found him to be arrogant. And I also feel when he speaks of Casey that he really does have respect for him and means what he says. I feel Ryan has tremendous respect for Casey and Dick Clark, among others. Their styles just aren't in demand, Ryan's is.
What I agree with most with what you wrote, and what I dislike most about current AT40, is that much of the content, even the imaging, is copied and pasted from his daily On Air show, which is already copied and pasted from his LA morning show.

Wow...I was about to post pretty much the exact same thing. I'll add one thing to this though. The time when AT40 didn't cater well to its audience (meaning its persistence in using BB) killed it in the USA in 94, and worldwide in 95.

Enjoyed the opinion article!
One question, does anyone in the radio world know how long the WT40 will continue to air? The article's writer speculated this may be Dees's last year. I have listened to the WT40 (off and on) since 1985(!) and right now enjoy the Hot AC version. I am wondering if this year may be it.

I agree in this could be the last year of ricko. It happens every year, but this 4 last shows have been done without excitement and they look like as simple fillers. Being the same for both editions and even the Xmas show was the same of 2010.
I love Rick´s shows. I think Ryan does whatever but an AT40.
BTW, excellent article above. Thanks.

The one thing I can say about Ryan Seacrest as AT40 host is if he was such a bad host, he or the show would've never made it to 2010. Obviously, Shadoe Stevens couldn't save the show in 1995.
What I do like about Seacrest over Rick Dees was AT40 continued the policy of never banning songs from the show, something Dees did far too frequently once hip hop become dominant. Such songs made the chart for a reason and I felt he completely disrespected their presence.

While it might not be the case now since it dominates the chart, back in the 90s that practice seemed to work in Dees's favor as his was the #1 show in the USA. I think that is part of the reason why. Not the only reason mind you, but part of it.

The show was mismanaged, and poor Shadoe didn't have a chance against Casey (and Dees). I agree with Paul that Dees' skipping of songs helped out originally in the early '90s.

Just as I mentioned on another post on the board, AT40 is getting lost in Ryan's empire.

I have no idea whether this is Rick's last year or not, but the idea of the last 4 shows being "filler" shows is not tell-tale. They did the same thing last year.
