This is a question that might seem silly to some, but I think it at least deserves discussion:
Over the last quarter of a century, Mariah Carey has dominated the Pop/Soul/Dance charts. The numbers are staggering of the number ones on these charts, and she has been able to transform herself in ways that stayed fresh for the next wave of new fans. She has been a fixture on AT 40 (and CT 40 ) and she was able to do it for 20 years rarely missing a beat. She has more number one songs than every artist, except the Beatles (and of course the four Beatles separate if you include their solo number ones along with their Beatles number ones).
But something I read today made me totally take notice. When it comes to songwriters who have had number ones, the Top 3 are: 32 for Paul McCartney, 26 for John Lennon, and then Mariah Carey with 17. Mariah Carey has WRITTEN more number one hits than every person who has lived on this planet besides Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
I totally understand that pop charts have little relevance on the R-n-R HOF, but when you beat everyone out except for the Beatles, that's something to take into consideration, I'm sure.
She'll be up, I believe in two years...any thoughts on Mariah Carey being in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame?

No, just no, not when so many other no brainers like (ELO) Electric Light Orchestra, Phil Collins, Chicago, The Doobie Brothers, The Alan Parsons Project, Three Dog Night, The Spinners, The J. Geils Band, The Cars and many, many more are still on the outside looking in, but they will do it by letting her and Whitney Houston in first!

Yes she should be in, yes she will. Though probably not first ballot.

I agree I think she will be in. And she will jump ahead of some that should be going in, in front of her. But thats the way it is. I didnt know only Paul and John had more #1 songs written than she did. I liked her early in her career but never cared for her much after '95 and never cared for that diva attitude that she has. But have to give it up to her, a heck of a singer and great songwriter. So I think she deserves to be in.

I might be the biggest Spinners fan there is, so I agree that they and Thom Bell should have gotten some love a long time ago (though Bell is in the songwriters HOF). As for the other groups you mentioned, since Heart got in it gives all of those groups I'm sure a shot...

Doobie Brothers also. I like all those you mention. It's a shame they will get passed over but I agree Whitney will get the pass over them also. The one thing I dont like about todays music scene they just seem to forget all these artists and bands that laid the ground work for todays artists. I know i'm getting old and dont give two cents for the music of today. But when you dont teach the history and you have todays youth getting slammed by this sub par music, the past just gets swept under the rug. Im so glad my parents taught me about the music they listened to and I had an open mind to it and love it still to this day. But since I was born in the 70's and 80's music is a big part of what I listen to. I try to teach the same thing in my kids. They wont have any of it. After my generation dies I guess all the great music from 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's will just fade away into the sunset.

Koko B Ware's in so if you ever appeared you have a legit chance of making it.

Now you understand why Hall of Fames are right up there with award shows as to what I consider to be important. Not that I have anything against Heart or Koko B Ware. I just think these things make those who vote for them (or Vince McMahon) think they are more important than they are, sometimes they pick based on personal taste or the "whoa didn't see that coming" factor, not an unbiased opinion of anyone's work.

Yeah, I'm not by any means a Mariah Carey fan, but when you define the 90's music scene, she's up there. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Dr. Dre, and her are ones that I feel defined the way the music scene turned in the 90's. And along those lines, I think down the road people will be upset that groups like Matchbox 20 are not in, kind of like some of the groups that have been named here.

Along with Tom Lane, I'm also a big 70s Spinners and Thom Bell fan, then, to me Heart was less worthy than all those I mentioned! Speaking of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, on October 11th, 2012, Jeff Lynne was nominated as a Performer/Songwriter for 2013 induction.

I think Mariah will be in, but it won't happen for a long time. She definitely won't get in before Whitney Houston.

I think so, but (hopefully) not before the Moody Blues or Stylistics.
