Listening to the 12-6-96 show, Prince debuted at 23 with, "Betcha By Golly Wow" which shocked me because I know it didn't hit the Top 10. I checked it out and it would jump to 17 the next week, inch up to 16, drop to 17, plunge to 28...and was gone! Were there any other songs that debuted that high that floundered like that during the CT 40 years? In a time of chart stagnation...Prince, par for the course, did things his way

I was surprised to hear that top because I honestly don't think I ever head the song outside these countdown shows.

Noticed the title of this thread and wondered if Prince covered the Stylistics' hit from spring 1972 -- or was it a different recording? Don't believe their musical styles are that similar.

I'm surprised Prince even had a top 40 record in 1996. I would of thought he'd be done in 1995. Guess not.
Though I do agree, Prince did not have anything great after 1989, except for 2006's "Black Sweat". I personally think "Black Sweat" should have at least made it to AT40, even just barely.

I'm a big time Prince fan and I totally thought "Black Sweat" was going to make it. It did not unfortunately. Off the "Emancipation" album "Betcha By Golly" and "Holy River" both hit the Top 20. Though, as much of a Prince fan as I am, I had no idea that "Golly" had hit the Top 40 until I listened to this countdown. I knew "Holy River" made it to 15 (or around it) in early '97, so it literally shocked me that in December of '96 this song was debuting that high. As a Stylistics fan, Prince should have left this one alone. He was in love though and redid it. "Holy River" was played on the radio in rural Virginia top 40, however I'm still surprised at how high it ended up.

"7" is my second favorite song of all time. Prince had some great Top 40 hits in the 90's: "7", "Diamonds and Pearls", "Most Beautiful Girl In The World", "Letitgo", "Eye Hate U", "Morning Papers", "Thieves In The Temple", "Gett Off"...some of my favorite Prince songs all from the 90's.

I have to agree on many of these. "7" was overplayed, so I don't listen to it much anymore. However, "Diamonds and Pearls", "Morning Papers", and "Thieves in the Temple" are great Prince songs from the '90s.

20 years ago this week, "Both Sides of the Story" by Phil Collins was the highest debut at #23 as well (also on AT40 too as the highest debut @ 31). While this didn't flame out like "Betcha By Golly Wow" it did only get to #9. This comes off more to me as one of those infamous "first release from big star got a lot of initial play before everyone realized it's just ok" chart runs.

I remember when the song came out, and it was then that I realized Phil had jumped the shark. That's a pretty solid flame out!
