This past week's XM broadcast of 2/22/75 brought back memories of the incredible run of one week number ones that year. In a typical year during Casey's original run, it was very rare to have more than five #1 songs that ONLY lasted one week at number one. In fact, in 1984, Missing You was the only song all year to be a one week number one. In 1975, starting with Mandy and ending with Lovin' You, there were 12 straight one week number ones. There were also ten more single week number ones that year. I can't think of any other year that even comes close either number. In my mind, it speaks to the incredible quality of the songs that year that so few songs could last at number one--I'm sure some of you would take the opposite stance? Does anyone know if there are other years outside the original Casey run that have as many single week number ones?

Interesting point.
We know why the turnover ground to a halt in the '90s; but I've always wondered what explains variation in turnover during the Casey run (and into the late 80s). For example, does anyone know why so many songs had long #1 runs from 1981-1984, but then no song spent more than 4 weeks at #1 from early 1985 all the way until the Summer of 1991? It might be my own bias, but I can't imagine that there was more competition among good songs during my awful high-school years (1987-91) than during the second British invasion.

I checked BB'd Hot 100 from it 's begining in 1958 up to the end of 1999. The 12 weeks run of one week #1's in 1975 is the longest. There is a tie of for the second longest stretch of single week #1s. Begining the week of 6/11/77 and ending 8/13/77 when "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" spend its 2nd week at #1. In 1989, begining 6/3/89 and ending 7/29/89, when "Toy Soldiers" spent its 2nd week at #1. Those years had 7 single week #1s in a row.
1975 is the year with the most single week #1s, 24. 1974 is second with 23 single week #1s. 1977 and 1989 tie for third place with 19 single week #1s.
