This weekend,Premiere will be airing the "AT40" countdown from 10/7/72-One of the songs that will be prominently featured is Chuck Berry's "My Ding A Ling"-This is for board members like myself who were around forty years ago-Did your hometown station play "My Ding A Ling" or was it banned?-I remember that Musicradio 77 WABC in NYC played "My Ding A Ling" once & then removed it from their playlist-WABC prided itself on being a family friendly station & obviously the management deemed the song to be inappropriate.

No station I listened to in 1972 would play this one. Just as well since I've never cared for novelty songs.

I clearly remember hearing "My Ding-A-Ling" regularly on both KFRC and KLIV in my area.

In Chicago, "My Ding-A-Ling" reached number one on AT40 station WCFL. But the song never appeared on the WLS survey. That seems like a major contradiction considering the stations' Top 10 were almost always comparable.
And during that same year, "American Pie" reached number one on both WCFL and WLS. And for the year-end countdowns, WCFL ranked the song as their top hit of the year. But "American Pie" was nowhere to be found on the WLS Top 89 of 1972.

American Pie was either at the top or near the top of WABC's Top 100 of 1972. Musicradio WABC web site has all those old top 100 year end charts. From Christmas Day to New Years Day they only played songs from the survey and not anything else and Chuck Berry was not heard from.

I never heard this song on the radio back in 1972. I only became aware of it around 1975 or so.
Which brings me to a question, how many people who were in the audience actually went on serve in Parliament?

"Which brings me to a question, how many people who were in the audience actually went on serve in Parliament?"[/quote] This prompted me to look up the bio on Tony Blair. He was 19 at the time. Probably not in the audience for this but, didja know that Blair tried his hand at being a rock promoter and was a singer/guitarist for a band called Ugly Rumors before his life in politics. Chuck's record was pretty suggestive but nowhere near as explicit as this 1952 "My Ding A Ling" by Dave Bartholomew. Gotta wonder if this ever got on Alan Freed's turntable! www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=Vn3nASV-HIs&vq=large

"My Ding A Ling" was based on an R&B song called "Toy Bell" which Dr.Demento has played on his show.
