mct1 - a VERY good explanation of AT40 and 45RPM edits. It's very true that some folks may never have heard the 45RPM edits of many rock songs because of exposure on AOR stations. Since I worked at one when the Eddie Money song "Tickets" was out, I had never heard the 45RPM mix. In fact, I didn't even know about the re-done 45 until seeing posts on this board. Thank you for that brilliant explanation.

For what it's worth, the full nearly-seven-minute version of "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" was played once by Casey, although not during AT40's run (it was played as a Request & Dedication on "Casey's Top 40").

I'd forgotten that American Pie was continued on side B until someone here (it had to be here) reminded me. That, and Hey Jude, were the longest songs I'd ever heard at the time (7th or 8th grade. can't remember. had the same English teach both years.)

Premiere did quite a lot of editing of the 9/10/83 countdown, including shortening the #1 song. (I've heard this same show on SXM without the countdown songs edited.) Most of the optional extras were shortened or faded early as well.

A painful edit from 9/10/77 was Cold As Ice by Foreigner

From October 1970, the entire third verse of Long, Long, Time -- which was my favorite song for a long, long time. As usual it was an oldie when I first heard it in 74. While a lot of you were out buying the latest 45s, I was out trying to find the oldies stores... everything I wanted so bad, I wanted so bad because it was so hard to find. Unlike today.
Spoke to a friend in Boston the other night and he said Randolph Music, the oldies store, is still there, despite peer to peer music sharing/piracy. I was really surprised.

A glarin' example I caught this year was when 'The voice' by the Moodies was played on an '81 show. It was edited so even the title wasn't heard. It snuck in the lyrics: 'Understand the voice within...'. If Casey hadn't outcued it, you wouldn't've known what the title was! Not sure if it was a Premiere edit, or not.

I just heard a really messed up edit of Survivor's Is This Love on the 1987 year-end show.

I just heard a really messed up edit of Survivor's Is This Love on the 1987 year-end show. Me too. It sounded like a line in the bridge was repeated, and then they skipped a line near the end. I wonder if it was the radio station's player - I certainly don't remember that edit on the original version of the show.

I'm going to listen to the show again (either on WMXY or elsewhere) and see if I hear the same thing.

I listened to it this morning on WMXY and it didn't do that, so it was an issue with WWIS' player.

There seemed to be quite an amount of editing on the 1987 year-ender. But I can see why - when the show originally aired on January 2, 1988, they would have had to add 2 or 3 extra songs each hour and in order to allow for commercial time, editing was necessary in order to allow for those extra songs to be played each hour. I agree, it sucks - though I do see their point.
This is probably why Casey preferred to play the single versions of songs more than the full album versions. Though they have played the full album versions on seldom occasions (example being Madonna's "Borderline" on May 19, 1984, and Shadoe playing the full album version of "November Rain" in 1992 - I bet there had to be quite some editing on other songs that hour for sure!).

^^Shadoe didn't play the full version of "November Rain". He said that they were going to try and play it, but they never did.

One that sticks out to me that I've never heard, but I've read the cue sheet, was on 10/22/77 when "Just Remember I Love You" and "Baby What a Big Surprise" were part of a segment that lasted for 3:56 total, including Casey's lines; thus each song probably barely cleared 90 seconds. Even for a later three hour show that sounds extreme.
Also, in every AT40 show I've heard that included Shaun Cassidy's "Hey Deanie", from 1977-78, they played an edit that cut out the second verse and chorus; a song that wasn't too long to start with never seemed to exceed two minutes. (And even that was cut down further in the 1978 year end show that Premiere played).
The editing in the 1987 year end show does somewhat approximate what AT40 might have sounded like if it were still three hours then, though there were no LDD's or other extras (except for Casey recapping the 1980s previous yearend #1's and the medley of 1987 #1s near the end, which we'll hear next week.)
