I know it was a few months ago, but I remember a tweet that AT40 sent out saying Mick Jagger having a song in the Top 40 and also a song about him simultaneously ("Moves Like Jagger") had not happened to another artist since 1987 when ABC and Smokey Robinson pulled it off.
However, if I remember correctly it kinda sorta happened in 1999 when LFO mentioned New Kids on the Block in the chorus of the song, "Summer Girls" while at least one of their members was in the top 40 at the same time...I believe it was Joey McIntyre...anyone remember that? Jordan Knight also was big during this time as well...

Not only did ABC and Smokey Robinson pull this feat, but both ABC and Smokey Robinson were on the top 40 simultaneously - with Smokey's "One Heartbeat" and ABC's "When Smokey Sings". Not sure if there was one week where both those songs were in the top 10 the same week (I know "One Heartbeat" spent only one week in the top 10, peaking at #10 in late-September or earlier in October 1987). Mick Jagger hasn't had a hit on AT40 since "Rock And A Hard Place" with The Rolling Stones late in 1989, if I recall. So Mick Jagger and Maroon 5 were never on the top 40 simultaneously (not surprisingly, seeing that today's generation like listening to Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry, and other crappy artists from today over The Rolling Stones).

Not so fast my friend... Mick Jagger was featured on will.i.am's hit "T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)" along with Jennifer Lopez, which was on the chart at the same time as "Moves Like Jagger". (I had to look that up, since I don't actually listen to the current incarnation of AT40.)

That's right...hence the tweet AT 40 sent out. Mick Jagger was in the Top 40 this year (albeit in a "featured" role but I give credit...that's more than he got from the Jacksons for "State of Shock") at the same that Maroon 5 was in the Top 40. I don't think "One Heartbeat" and "When Smokey Sings" were in the Top 10 at the same time. And I'm pretty sure that the only combo that came close to the '87 feat and the '12 feat were LFO/Joey McIntyre back in 1999.

I don't think "One Heartbeat" and "When Smokey Sings" were in the Top 10 at the same time. Actually, they were. It was on October 3, 1987 that both songs were in the top 10 at the same time. "One Heartbeat" was at #10, and "When Smokey Sings" was at #8 that week. Premiere aired the broadcast a few years back. Could someone please clarify the year Premiere first aired October 3, 1987?

Good catch! I always think of "Smokey" as being in the Top 10 in September of 1987 and not that one week in October. And I'm pretty sure "One Heartbeat" spent one week at number 10...I remember Rick Dees at that time actually had Smokey Robinson (or someone who sounded like him) intro the ABC song and him messing up who they were! I loved that!

And oddly enough, I'm just finished hearing "When Smokey Sings" by ABC on the 80s rebroadcast right now! "One Heartbeat" by Smokey Robinson was at #40. Both songs are in this week's rebroadcast of August 15, 1987.
Makes me wonder if this thread may have inspired Premiere to air the August 15, 1987 episode this weekend?

Indeed it was - "I Love You Came Too Late" was on the chart at the same time as "Summer Girls", as was "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" by Jordan Knight. I know Rick Dees had mentioned this during the chart run of Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady", which name-dropped Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, both of whom were name-dropped by Eminem and had charting hits at the same time. He also mentioned that Shawn Mullins, who mentioned Cher in "Lullaby", charted alongside "Believe" by Cher, and New Radicals, who mentioned Courtney Love in "You Get What You Give", charted alongside "Malibu" by her band Hole. Also, on the alternative chart, while "You Get What You Give" and "Malibu" were charting in late 1998-early 1999, Beck also charted with "Tropicalia" and Marilyn Manson charted with "The Dope Show" - and both Beck and Marilyn Manson were also name-dropped by New Radicals! Too bad Hanson didn't have anything out then...

Too bad Hanson didn't have anything out then... Ugh. Words cannot express how much I hated Hanson, and still do.

LOL Old School! Thanks for the info freakyflybry...listening this week to the 8/15/87 show, Casey talked about the Smokey/ ABC feat and how each time before someone had a song about a pop star, the pop star also had a song on the top 40. You mentioned a few more cool ones: the Eminem v. Britney v. Christina is classic! But I wonder if there was a song about an artist (not just name dropping like shady or lfo) between 1987 and this year where the artist being sung about was NOT in the countdown at the same time as the song...
BTW...I wonder why Casey, when saying the five songs about other artists in 1987, didn't include "Missing You" by Diana Ross or "Nightshift" by the Commodores. Or "Secret Garden" by Elton John?

Probably because neither of the Marvin Gaye tributes had his name in the title. Though the Elton song's subtitle was (Hey Hey Johnny), and technically John Lennon was charting then on the Beatles Movie Medley...

BAHAAA! Yes sir with the Beatles Movie Medley! A nod of my head with that one!
I thought of a couple of songs that dropped names. One "Right Here, Right Now" had Bob Dylan, but Dylan wasn't anywhere close to the Hot 100 in '91. "Poison" by BellBivDevoe dropped Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, and Johnny Gill, and Brown and Gill were both on the Top 40 at the same time, I believe, with Tresvant coming on a couple months later. Then BoyzIIMen, dropped BellBivDevoe and Another Bad Creation...and maybe B2M and ABC intersected. Can't remember...
Oh, and there was a song specifically dedicated to an artist in 1991 where the artist was not on the Top 40. "Mama Said Knock You Out" by LL Cool J was a tribute to Kool Moe Dee. Though, I don't think it was homage that KMD would appreciate ;-D

In 2001, "Liquid Dreams" by O-Town was in the Top 40. The lyrics mention Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson and Destiny's Child. I'm pretty sure one or more of those artists was on the countdown at the same time as that song.

Too bad Angelina Jolie, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks, Salma Hayek or Halle Berry had no hits on the chart then, though I do know Tyra has recorded music. EDIT: Turns out Janet didn't - "All For You" debuted the week "Liquid Dreams" fell out of the top 40.

If You go back to the summer of 1971 Cymarron had "Rings" ("got James Taylor on the Stereo") and JT with Fire and Rain.
