BBC Special: 60th Anniversary Artists Chart
The 60th anniversary on this post refers to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (not the 60th anniversary of the first British Sales charts: That’ll come later this November.)
Just hours before this month’s Diamond Jubilee Rock Concert outside of Buckingham Palace (on June 4) BBC Radio 2 broadcast a Top 60 countdown commissioned specially by the UK’s Official Chart Company. The title was The Top 60 Singles acts of the last 60 years, hosted by Tony Blackburn. According to BBC Radio 2 this specially commissioned chart was being updated up to just a few days before its broadcast. Note: Just like all the main British charts in-house sales figures was the only criteria (not the chart performance according to the weekly individual charts). This again was an Artists chart: one distinct act per position. Therefore no matter how big a sale of a particular single was (like Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” it could compete cumulatively in the final tally against people with a string of hits, since the act was a one-time event with one single only.
After each artist’s announcement, Radio 2 then played the act’s UK’s best selling single of all time. Even though BBC 2 has no commercial, it couldn’t play all the positions in the 3 hours allocated for the show. For reference those missed positions are denoted by * in the following list (most were seasonal hits and in case of no. 18 Eminem rap hit that isn’t in Radio 2 format). Here’s their complete playlist
