There were several songs about Jesus in the 1971 countdown this past weekend (possibly more than in any Top 40 countdown?)
Anyway, who here will be the first to name the seven Top Ten songs mentioning Jesus by name, all in a span of less than three years? And none of them were in this countdown!
So it has to be "Jesus" - not "Christ", or "the man from Galilee".

Lord Help Me Jesus was one of them. One Toke Over the Line was another.

Why Me didn't make the Top Ten, but Brewer and Shipley did, and that is one of the seven songs.

Lord Help Me Jesus is a line from "Why Me" by Kris Kristofferson which missed the Top 10. Unless Chris will count AT40's Top 40 of 1973 where it ranked at #2. This is a tough one Chris and, unless someone takes the time to google and research your topic, I doubt one person knows all 7 songs. I thought that "American Pie" mentioned Jesus, but I had to go back and review the lyrics and discovered it only comes close with "the Father, Son and Holy Ghost."

Sorry. I didn't remember the title and just went with Lord Help Me Jesus. Also didn't remember it never hit the top 10.

"Fire and Rain" by James Taylor mentions Jesus in the second verse. Also, Ray Stevens' No. 1 song "Everything is Beautiful" opens with the line "Jesus loves the little children."

The Cowsills' "Hair" in 1969. So this 3 year period bridges decades!

It does indeed, and I had forgotten about Hair. There are EIGHT songs that made the Top Ten that mentioned Jesus by name.

Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In the Sky" in spring 1970.

Correct. That makes five of eight.
Or four of seven. See below.

The Cowsills' "Hair" in 1969. So this 3 year period bridges decades! I need some help on this. Did the Top Ten hit version of Hair by the Cowsills mention Jesus? I'm not sure. The lyrics websites say it did but I don't remember hearing it.

I didn't realize your topic ventured outside of AT40's time period. In that case, add "Oh Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers.

Yes that is correct and it means we are still looking for two songs.
