I was just listening to my copy of the Rock and Roll time sweep, which plays a snippet, in order, of every number one song from 1956-81. It made me wonder how many of those songs were deprived of their week at the top due to an AT40 Special or Year End Countdown. While many songs are multiple week number ones, songs such as Lovin' You by Minnie Riperton never had their day--due to an AT40 special.
Does anyone have a list of the songs that were deprived their day at the top?

I know that "Please Don't Go" was never played on AT40 as a number one song, because it was number one the week that they did the "Top 50 songs of the 1980s.
And I believe there was at least one instance where a song spent its only week at number one on Independence Day weekend, when AT40's specials pre-empted the regular show. In the summer of 1977, there was a whole string of one-week number one songs. On July 2, 1977, if my memory serves me correctly, "Gonna Fly Now" by Bill Conti was number one, but the Independence Day special was played that weekend in lieu of the regular countdown, thus "Gonna Fly Now" was not played.
This would have happened to "Dirty Diana" by Michael Jackson in 1988 had AT40 not started producing both a regular show and a weekly show on Independence Day weekend. I forget what year that they started doing this, though.

The Top 100 of 1975 deprived two songs of being heard at #1 on AT40. "Let's Do It Again" hit #1 on Billboard's final chart of 1975, and "Saturday Night" replaced it on the first Hot 100 of 1976 (for one week).

The same thing happened one year ealier in 74 when "Cats In the Cradle" by Harry Chapin and "Angie Baby" by Helen Reddy were at #1 during the Top 100 of 1974 countdown.

Here are a few more... *Neil Diamond's 2nd #1 record, Song Sung Blue (July 1, 1972) *Blue Swede's only #1, Hooked On A Feeling (April 6, 1974) *David Bowie's first #1, Fame (October 4, 1975)

Another would have been "There will be Sad Songs" by Billy Ocean which was number #1 on the first show of July 1986 but didn't get played due to the Giants of Rock and Roll special.

Actually, I'm pretty sure there was a regular show produced for the weekend that GOR was aired.

So was that show one of those "replace your morning radio show with this since you probably don't have them on anyway" shows? I seemed to get that idea from the Dees "Platinum Plus" special since it was to air on Memorial Day.

Probably. I know that WPLJ in New York did that with both the 20th anniversary special and the "All-American Acts" special in 1990 and 1991 respectively. Scott

Seems to be me that this would make a great AT20 or AT10 show...give Casey a chance to honor all of the songs that never had their day. There have been over 60 shows that were pre-empted by the year end countdowns and another 30 plus specials...I would think that there were at least 30 #1 songs that were never honored and could fill up a current show! I'll bet you the guys in Blue Swede are still crushed that they never had their day at #1!

Regarding the post above. "Fame" by David Bowie did get played at #1. True on 10-4 there was a special, but the song dropped from #1, and then returned a week later, thus getting a second chance and being played on a show at #1.
Thus it should be elimnated from the list.

There was another song that hit No. 1 that was deprived of their show at No. 1. "Rock The Boat" by the Hues Corporation hit No. 1 the week of July 6, 1974, however that week, AT40 aired one of their special. A footnote to "Song Sung Blue"by Neil Diamond, I was very disappointed that AT40 aired a special show that week instead of the regular show since "Song Sung Blue" was No. 1 on the charts on the day that I was born (June 29, 1972).

Great topic for a thread! You could also apply that to those songs that spent only one week at #40,but weren't heard due to an AT40 "Special"--thus denying the song its one shot at national airplay. One that comes to mind immediatly is Alice Cooper's "Clones" which spent one week at #40 but wasn't heard due to the 4th of July special in 1980.

"Fame" first hit #1 on September 20, 1975, then returned to the top spot on October 4 when it wasn't heard due to the special.
