Just heard this on the radio a few minutes ago.....
The Band singer Levon Helm passed away Thursday following a long battle with throat cancer, the Times Herald-Record reports. Band leader and guitarist Larry Campbell announced the sad news about Helm, who was 71 years old.
Helm was diagnosed with cancer back in 1998 — but on April 17, Helm's family posted a message on his website that Helm was "in the final stage of his battle with cancer."
Helm is best remembered for his work with The Band, singing hits like "The Weight" and "Up on Cripple Creek." He also won a Grammy in 2007 for Best Traditional Folk Album — and in 2010 for Best Americana Album. Music, however, wasn't his only talent. Helm also took to the silver screen as Loretta Lynn's father in 1980 classic, Coal Miner's Daughter, and appeared in other films like 1996's Feeling Minnesota and 1997's Fire Down Below.
Helm also inspired other artists: Elton John's "Levon" was named for the musician, and Martin Scorsese directed The Band's original final 1976 performance into a documentary, The Last Waltz. (Though the musician had a complicated relationship with the film, which he criticized following its release.) The multi-talented singer was also a memoirist, penning his autobiography, This Wheel's On Fire, in 1993.
But, unsurprisingly, Helm's greatest passion was his music. As he wrote in his autobiography, "If it doesn't come from your heart, music just doesn't work."

For those not in the know, The Band came from New Brunswick, Canada. They had a hit in the mid-1970s called "Acadian Driftwood", which kind of gives away the fact that they are from New Brunswick.
My most favorite song by The Band is "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)" - a song that K-ROCK in St. John's, Newfoundland plays regularly. "Life is a Carnival" is pretty good too.
BTW, has The Band had any entries on AT40? And I only know of two other acts from Atlantic Canada who had entries on AT40 and/or CT40. Anne Murray being one, and Sarah McLachlan being another - both from Nova Scotia. Were there any others I missed? I'd be totally surprised if the band Haywire from Prince Edward Island had a hit on AT40.
Levon Helm will surely be missed. His time has surely come, unlike King Harvest.

Although most of the Band were from Canada, Levon Helm was from Arkansas. In the late fifties he joined fellow Arkansan Ronnie Hawkins' band, the Hawks. The Hawks relocated to Toronto, where one by one they were replaced by native Canadians except for Hawkins and Helm. Eventually the Hawks split from Hawkins and later changed their name to the Band.
The Band had one hit on American Top 40: "Don't Do It" in 1972.

The Band had one hit on American Top 40: "Don't Do It" in 1972. And it's one of a few songs by The Band that hasn't been played on K-ROCK in Newfoundland. Songs by The Band that are involved in K-ROCK's playlist: "Ophelia" "The Weight (Take A Load Off Annie)" (or Fanny, whatever floats your boat) "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)" "Life Is A Carnival" "Up On Cripple Creek" "The Shape I'm In" I know "Acadian Driftwood" is not K-ROCK material, as it sounds more like smooth pop - a sign that they were evolving from classic rock to pop, just like The Doobie Brothers and Fleetwood Mac did. And The Band went downhill after that.
