I've always been a big lyric listener and am always curious as to the meanings of the songs. In most cases I can figure it out - or at least decide what it means to me.
In the past weekend's 1977 show, Manfred Mann's "Blinded By the Light" was in the top 5. This is one song everybody seems to like, but I just can't realy figure out what it means. The lyrics are kind of obscure.
Can anyone explain it?

A lot of songs from the 1970s tell a story. Like many of Elton John's songs, such as "Levon" and "Daniel" to name two. Gordon Lightfoot was a really good storyteller of a singer - his song 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" really told a story.
But songs didn't really tell a story once disco became mainstream - nothing but songs about love, girls, dancing, etc.
Though I do believe Ashford & Simpson's "Solid" from early 1985 did have meaning. The meaning of that song, I think, was about how a couple could solve problems while they are married (which explains why the song starts in a capella form "And for love's sake, each mistake...").
"Mr. Telephone Man" by New Edition was about how a telephone repairperson annoyed at least one of the boys when he/they couldn't try to call their girlfriends/lovers. Though "Mr. Telephone Man", not what the song was about, was Alexander Graham Bell, because he invented it.
"Night Shift" by The Commodores and "Missing You" by Diana Ross were both tributes to Marvin Gaye, who was murdered one year beforehand.
Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" was about how strict teachers were and how the kids want to create a brick wall to protect themselves from the strict teachers.
George Harrison's "When We Was Fab" was a hit in 1988 and it was about George Harrison reminiscing about his glory days with The Beatles. His other hit, "All Those Years Ago", was about his glory days with The Beatles as well as a tribute to the slain John Lennon.
"The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy and Monica was a song that was about a feud over who the boy belongs to - Brandy or Monica? This sounds like a Betty vs. Veronica situation that will remain a mystery.

A Horse with No Name sounds very deep when you hear it. Alas, it means nothing. The band thought the words sounded good together.

I always thought there was some sort of back to nature/environmental message to it, as when they complain "the humans won't give no love" and celebrate being able to remember your name in the desert without being bothered by other people. But the words aren't particularly convincing. "The heat was hot"--gee, thanks for clearing that up.

And I must be very tired because you're last statement is cracking me up big time.

Marsh also claimed that "All I Have To Do Is Dream" was about a guy pleasuring himself. Whatever the case, anyone who listens to rock 'n' roll for the lyrics is missing the point.

Blinded By The Light written by Bruce Springsteen (and on his debut album) is about starting out in the music business isn't it? All of sudden out of no where you're thrust into the spotlight. Another Brick In The Wall is just one story out of the rest of The Wall album about little things in life that cause one to shut everyone out. The death of his father, an over bearing mother, short lived romances, school etc. all lead to this guy barricading himself from all emotion.

If you listen closely, not only are they annoyed with the repairperson but it sounds like they are also in denial. Their baby's playing games with them and there is infidelity but they just refuse to acknowledge that sadly. "My baby wouldn't hang up on me" or "Some strange man is on the telephone". Isn't that an indicator or what? Watched "Cheaters" lately?

Dave Marsh claims the song is about masturbation; but he claims that about most rock songs! . I don't know how Dave Marsh described these songs, but many believe these songs fit the category, Imaginary Lover,Tiny Dancer and Bang The Drum All Day. I do not know ONE person who thinks Tiny Dancer is about pleasuring yourself, nor do I even hear anything in the lyrics that even REMOTELY suggest it. According to Bernie Taupin, he wrote it about his first wife, Maxine Fiebelman. The song was dedicated to her on the album Madman Across the Water. What is with people lately misunderstanding Bernie Taupin's lyrics. First Nikita and now Tiny Dancer...
