The Olympic Games in London open on July 27th. So far there's no word on who may perform at the opening ceremony which is being downplayed because they don't want to raise expectations that it will be on the same monumental scale as the Beijing Games opener four years ago.
The closing ceremony is being called "A Symphony of British Music" led by the LSO. Adele is confirmed to perform.
No doubt that brit legends like Sir Paul and The Rolling Stones are in consideration and possibly Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. There are rumors that organizers are at impasse with Elton John. It would really be a shame if he was not there.
I hope the organizers do better than their contribution to the Beijing closing; a pitiful mismatch of Leona Lewis and Jimmy Page.
My suggestion for something that would be a peak, have Paul and Ringo together doing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band" and "With A Little Help From My Friends". I don't think that medley has ever been done by them live.
The ceremonies are being produced by Danny Boyle, the director of "Slumdog Millioniare" and "127 Hours".

Not surprised that Adele will perform, seeing she's today's musical sensation from the UK.
Not surprising at all that Sir Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, and two members from The Who are likely to perform. However, it seems weird that Elton John is all of a sudden very leery about performing.
And the Olympics is not the only big event happening in London this year - Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her diamond jubilee - 60th anniversary in the throne - this year. 2012 is looking to have a busy summer in London for sure!

For traditional events like the Olympics, the older generation typically watches anyway. On the other hand, the youngsters have to be drawn in. So my thinking is that they would want somebody who is charting now rather than years ago. Thus, it would not surprise me if many of those names do not appear.
