I posted this on another message board a while ago, but I will also post it here.
I just downloaded an April 1988 broadcast of American Top 40 this evening, and Casey mentioned that the song "Rocket 2 U" by The Jets was originally offered to the funk group Earth, Wind & Fire.
My question to ask all of you: If Earth, Wind & Fire would have accepted the song instead of The Jets, do you think the song would have done just as well chartwise or would the song have done better by The Jets?
And doesn't "Rocket 2 U" sound like a song that would be written by Prince?

Since Earth, Wind, and Fire at about the same time failed to hit the pop top 40 with their single "System of Survival", even though it hit #1 on the R&B chart (then called the Black Singles chart), I'd have to say that the Jets' version would have fared better chartwise, though EW&F would quite likely made a better version musically IMO (though the Jets' version is fine too.)

"Rocket 2 U" was actually produced as I mentioned on one of my shows by Bobby Nunn, an unsung funk n soul artist known for his huge hit "She's Just A Groupie" back in 1982.

That song is a legend and it sounds so fresh and new as it is released right now. It´s one of my favourite.
Isn´t it the last hit by The Jets?

"Make It Real", which followed this up, was also a hit... THAT was their last major hit. And "Make It Real" was indeed their last hit to enter the top 40. Peaking at #4 in June or July 1988. A great way for The Jets' exposure on AT40 to go out. And "Make It Real" kind of reminds me of a certain Milli Vanilli song, to be quite honest. I wonder if "Make It Real" was on AT40 during the Casey/Shadoe changeover?

I wonder if "Make It Real" was on AT40 during the Casey/Shadoe changeover? Not quite. Its last week on AT40 was 7/30/88, when Daryl Hall & John Oates guest hosted, one week before Casey's final show before decamping for Westwood One and CT40.

Are you kidding me?? "Rocket 2 U" is lyrically one of the worst songs of the 80s; it would sound bad no matter who sings it.

The video clip is what I dont like. I have heard some mixes of the song in American Dance Traxx show. It´s a legend. I think this band only has 2 albums, I bought the cassettes in a fly market. From American Dance Traxx , april 2, 1988, the song in at number 4. www.goear.com/listen/693ec70/rocket-2u-jets

^ I like that mix. Power 95 (WAPE) in Jacksonville had their own mix shows on Friday and Saturday nights and that was the version they'd use (vivid memory of them segueing from Fleetwood Mac's "Family Man" into "Rocket 2 U" one weekend).
Was that Jeff Wyatt announcing at the end of the clip?

Actually, in the clip, "Fish Net" by Morris Day was the lead in to "Rocket 2 U". It seems quite eerie how they could turn a song by Fleetwood Mac ("Family Man") into a dance remix. It really butchers the original song. I like the original single or album version of "Family Man" more.
